I am not generally one to post screenshots on FA, but this was my first foray into actually modding Skyrim - giving my Skyrim-child Fahdonmul shiny claws like he has in the artwork I've commissioned. This was done by extracting the dragon DDS files (both texture map and normal map), loading them into GIMP and painting the dragon's claws gloss black.
This took a lot of experimentation, not least because the core dragon texture map is very sensitive to the alpha channel being saved correctly, and the default texture compression algorithm literally shredded his wings (and other body parts). DXT5 works, however.
The second problem was figuring out how to make the claws shiny. This is handled by the dragon_n.dds file, which is helpfully stored in a completely different BSA file to the basic dragon.dds file which contains the textures. The alpha transparency level in the normal file determines how glossy the texture is.
Because Fahdonmul is the basic dragon, modifying his claws affected ALL dragons of that type, resulting in the likes of Mirmulnir, Vuljotnaak, Vinny and Mr. Dragon from the cutscene also getting surprise manicures. But I can live with that.
A future project might be to literally create a new dragon entity for Fahdonmul, like Silah (mortal-soul hunter) or the Akatosh Avatar, on the assumption that Play-As-A-Dragon SE is automatically detecting available dragons rather than being a hard-coded list, but I rather like making my minions look pretty.
Mods used in the screenshot were: Play-As-A-Dragon SE and Beyond Skyrim: Bruma. I used the "tfc 1" command to freeze the scene and find the best camera position for the screenshot.
