A study piece about Chaos from years ago that I keep forgetting about...
Chaos had to get away. He couldn't stand all the sympathetic yet disdainful looks that the other gargoyles were giving him. It had taken him weeks not to flinch when any of them came up to him and longer still to not flinch at his own reflection. He winced at the thought and his glasses jabbed painfully into his swollen cheek. Taking them off, he let the world blur for a moment.
He didn't mind the pain so much. It was the only thing that reminded him that this was really happening to him. He was no longer a nerdy introvert working in an office cube like a nameless drone. It wasn't living but it was his life and to have it all thrown into chaos by a whim of chance was more than he could bear.
The clan had been more than kind to him, he knew that. He should really be grateful but he mourned the lost of his old life. Never to walk in the sun, never to see his family again -- so many regrets. He was slowly coming to grips with that but as he became accustomed to his gargoyle state, a whole new set of problems emerged.
He was a royal screw-up as far as flying went but crashing was getting easier. The first time in stone sleep was terrifying and waking up was a miracle. All his senses were heightened -- there were so many new things in the world that it felt like he'd spent his whole life sleepwalking.
His nose got him in trouble.
It led him to her.
Whenever he was around Gadget, he felt drawn to her. He didn't know why, she wasn't his kind of girl -- hell, she wasn't a girl at all, was she? Chaos sighed and reminded himself not to think that way. He had to let it go but his human side recoiled from the thought of getting it on with a gargoyle.
So to avoid the subject, he went out of his way to piss her off. Not that it took that much effort. Gadget would argue just to be contrary. Fighting words would lead to flying fists and he surprised himself by not backing down and taking all the punishment she could dish out. The old him would have run screaming.
In all the fuss, there would be moments where she would cock her head and almost smile --- and the world would stop. She made him feel amazing. His blood ran hotter and his heart beat harder and there was this crazy smell that made him hungry in ways that no food could ever satisfy.
It terrified him and it thrilled him and he didn't have a clue about what to do next.
