Naughty or Nice? 🎅🎄
It seems Christmas is really on the way! 🎁 We’ve already tasted some ginger cookies from the supermarket, and I spotted a poster about Mikulás (the Hungarian Santa Claus) on our way home today. So naturally, my mind went straight to this guy!
Do you know who Krampus is? 😈 You might’ve seen him in that horror movie where he’s a terrifying demon punishing people on Christmas, or read about him in Gerald Brom's fantasy novel Krampus: The Yule Lord. But have you ever heard of the Krampus runs?
In Alpine folklore, Krampus is a goat-like or demon-like creature, the mischievous and sometimes downright scary "helper" of Saint Nicholas (called Mikulás in Hungary and Nikolaus in Austria). On Saint Nicholas Day, December 6th, nice children get sweets from Mikulás—but the naughty ones? They get a visit from Krampus! In modern times, he’s more likely to bring them coal than birch rods... but that wasn’t always the case! 🎄🥢
The real excitement starts on Krampusnacht, the night of December 5th! 🌌 In alpine regions like Styria, Bavaria, Salzburg, and Tyrol, traditional Krampus parades (or Krampus runs) take over the streets with smoke, fire, and plenty of noise.
I’d dreamed of visiting one of these Krampus runs for years, and my dream finally came true in Graz! There, the Krampuses charged down the street with birch rods, giving onlookers’ legs a pretty painful (but thrilling) "gift." 😅
As for this cute little Krampus plush, I made him as a gift for our wonderful host in Graz, who also joined us for the Krampus run.
So, all you naughty boys and girls, watch out—he’s coming for you! 😜👹
One of a kind plush.
I do commissions.
