It's occurring to me that he just set off her 'Me First' ability last page. Which means he can technically attack her now at any time, since he's already triggered the retaliation effect. Guess we'll see if he realizes that...and if he decides to actually go through with it, since he seems to be getting attached to her...
This whole comic works on turn-based RPG logic. 'Me First' doesn't trigger based on things she does; it's entirely dependent on what her opponent does - any action an enemy tries to take the initiative on for their first turn, it automatically skips that turn and hits them with a retaliation penalty. The dragon 'attacked' her directly last page by scratching her face, and got immediately hit with the backlash when trying to flee, meaning we literally saw Me First get triggered and her turn activated against him. Now it's technically his turn again, and since 'Me First' only skips the first move, he *should* be in the clear now.
"Me First" in this story works in a straightforward way: it activates at the start of battle and always allows the user to attack first. As long as the user does not attack the enemy, the enemy cannot attack the user.
This ability continues to trigger indefinitely, regardless of how many turns pass. However, once the user attacks the enemy, the ability ends, allowing the enemy to retaliate. From that point on, the battle proceeds as normal.
