"There! That's him! Are you going to-"
"Not yet."
"But he is standing RIGHT there! And he is all alone!!!"
"No."
"But-" The katana's cool, sharp tip kissed his lips as she glared at him, instantly stifling him.
"Not.Yet."
With a defeated nod, the farmer slumped to the ground and quietly waited besides her. He could not help but be anxious and a little excited....not to mention a little concerned: what if she failed?
Tightly clutching a small, brown pouch, jingling with coins, he held it up to the lyolf, ushering her to take it. A little motivation to ensure she succeeded and did not fail. She merely nudged it away, muttering something about taking payment after she had completed her assignment-
In actuality, she had no interest in payment: THIS TIME.
This was one of the rare exceptions she was willing to take on a mission for free due to the circumstances. Not to mention, she knew the farmer barely had much income to spare. She was doing this mission mostly because she felt empathetic towards the farmer and his circumstances-
The person she was hunting had been harassing the farmer and his family, threatening to kidnap his eldest daughter and run off with her. The farmer, while headstrong and resilient, knew his limitations. He was not as young as he used to be, and knew the chances of him taking on this guy would not end well. He could not risk losing and sacrifice himself and leave his family unable to fend for themselves.
Thankfully, one of the farmer's neighbors was aware of the situation and reached out to Whisper to ask for assistance. Feeling listless and bored from a lack of hunting lately, she eagerly accepted the mission; it was unusually slow and she could use something to do in the meantime.
He stood on the stoop of the pub, looking up at the moonlight. He had been standing still there for about 15 minutes now- as if he was waiting on something...or someone. She watched; it would be just her luck to attack him and someone walk up on them. He was too "exposed." Whisper had a strict policy not to assassinate anyone in plain sight: the risk of witnesses was too great: one person could make her life a living hell if they saw her take out someone.
The farmer being here, while vexing and against her policy, was understandable: he wanted proof...and closure...to an annoyance.
After a few more minutes had passed and he still had not moved from that spot, Whisper was getting impatient as well- and confused. What was he waiting on?!
"You can come out now, I know you are there, lyolf."
HE KNEW.
"Stay here. Don't move, no matter what." Making sure the farmer was out of harm's way and understood her instructions, she then headed towards her prey.
There would be no running, lunging, or sneaking up on him; he knew she was there, so she was going to approach him like the snake that he was!
She drew back her mouth in a snarl as she walked up to him. How dare he sense her presence. So that is why he was standing there the whole time- he was waiting on her.
As she got close to him and their eyes locked she drew out her blade, "It's a lovely night to die, is it not?"
(To be continued)
What happens when the prey is two steps ahead of the predator?
Whisper actually has to put some real work and effort into her missions, that is what happens. It's fine; she actually enjoys the challenge.
Last summer piece of Whisper for the season- now that I am somewhat settled down in life, I can go back to posting art semi-regularly again :)
Absolutely wicked piece by: maahir2005. Her sona resembles Whisper so much, I had to have her draw Whisper- and needless to say I was not disappointed. Thank you so much again! Highly recommend you watch her if you are not already
