LU wanted to build a new tube line in South London. This will be called the "Southern" line. The line was completed in 1981. Now onto the trains!
Hawker Siddeley sent out a bit for a variant of the 1200 Series they built for Boston in Canada. This one being a domestically/British built version adapted for use on the underground. This came in the form of the London Underground 1982 Stock or "82 Stock", unlike their counterparts, they lacked the buffers on the face and a horn. But these did have whistles along with the same motors used on the TTC. (Which sound like the Tatra T6A5 tram) and also 4th rail shoes.
All units were built at the Hawker Sidderley plant in Hatfield Hertfordshire.
They entered service in March 1983 and served the line between Wimbledon and Stratford. The line has a mix of Deep-Level and Sub-Surface aspects. In 2008 they were sent for a major refurbishment by Hawker Sidderley and Bombardier at Hatfield and Derby. (Derby works later got taken over by Hawker Sidderley) They were given the same inverters as the 2009 stock, refreshed seats, painted grab poles, new lighting and new floors.
In 2022, they underground sections of the line these served was given internet. They were also joined by some of their Boston cousins which only had a exterior refresh. The rest were either used on other Metro lines in the UK or being used as spares.
They are due to be replaced by either Skoda or Siemens rolling stock in the near future.
The 82 stock is also used in these cities in the UK.
