As the 1970's drew to a close, America was mired in inflation and sky-high economic rates. People had become discouraged with themselves and their country.
But in 1980, Republican candidate Ronald Reagan won the presidential election. Once in office, Reagan stopped inflation and lowered interest rates. In a matter of time, Wall Street skyrocketed. People had more money to spend then before. Optimism in the American dream was restored as well. College graduates were able to start their own businesses and rose to success. They became known as young urban professionals, or yuppies for short.
Technological advancements were on the rise. Personal and home computers became affordable.
Music was also advancing. Added electronic riffs and rhythms that became known as New Wave. Music videos were becoming immensely popular and people, especially teenagers, gathered to watch their favorite bands perform their latest songs.
But the 80's still had its problems. A new disease was discovered. The AIDS virus would go on to kill thousands of people over the course of the decade. The Cold War was intensifying. The Soviets were developing bigger and far more destructive nuclear weapons. And there were tensions rising in the Middle East over hostage crises and acts of terrorism. Many people feared a nuclear war was coming. Despite the hostilities, both sides would try to negotiate peace with one another.
Not since the 1950's had Americans experienced a sense of hope, optimism and patriotism.
The 1980's were a decade of new ideas, technology and success. For many, it was a decade to remember.
