American waffles are usually thinner, flatter, more chewy, and have smaller syrup divots. The other option in the states is the "Belgian Waffle" as it is called here, which has bigger divots, is crispier, is more yeasty and lighter than American variants; however, it differs in shape from the true Belgian waffles found on the streets of Liege and Brussels.

Thank you for explaining the difference, I've had both kinds of Belgian waffles but even though I recognise the description of American ones I've never had them.
Scandinavian waffles are usually made in the shape of five hearts and thin compared to Belgian ones and usually not as firm.
