Real World Moon Phase = Last Quarter
Time Since The Shift = 7 Hours, 55 Minutes
The Wanderer's Plains, Digital World
Alex made a cautious step back at Kudamon's command, keeping the trunk of the tree between himself and WereGarurumon. He didn't get a second step in before the howling stopped, and the sound of claws scratching stone reached him.
“Keep going. I have an idea.” Kudamon said before he made his way around the tree. Alex paused for a moment, despite his heart racing and his growing fear pushing him to run.
“You there.” WereGarurumon's voice was just as chilling as his howling; deep and with a touch of growling to it. “What are you hiding?”
Shit.
“Nothing, WereGarurumon.”
“Lies. Something stinks like a virus near that tree.”
Alex's panic won at that, and he backed up too fast. He heard WereGarurumon's claws scratch the stone again, and then...
“Wait!”
“Kaiser Nail!”
A moment later, rows of ethereal energy sliced at the tree, cutting off branches or slashing by and gouging into the grass and dirt. Alex caught himself from tripping in shock, though now was too terrified to move, even when he heard WereGarurumon land in the grass.
“The one back there is my partner. He means us no harm.”
“Lies. None of us partner with a Virus type, only with Humans.”
“He is human.”
“He doesn't smell like one.”
“I understand, but there is a reason.”
“Oh, really? And why should I believe you? You lied to me before.”
“I did no such thing. You picked up his scent. You knew he was there. I said he means you no harm, and I meant it.”
“Then why does he stink like a Virus type? What did that to him?”
“Nothing did. He came to this world like that.”
WereGarurumon took a moment to process the reply. Instead of replying with words, it began to walk towards Alex's location, despite Kudamon's protests.
When Alex saw the WereGarurumon's face, and realized how much taller it was than him, he took a step back. His tail tucked and his ears laid back at the sight, and his muzzle formed into a snarl.
Kudamon then ran in front of Alex and spoke up. “He is not human at the moment, but he will be again.”
“'At the moment?'”
“Yes. He was not in this form until several hours ago.”
“Form? So he's like us, then?”
“In a way, yes.”
The WereGarurumon hummed, the noise sounding more like a rumbling growl. All the while, his focus never wavered.
“If you are not fully convinced, Seraphimon himself can support my claim.”
“Is that so?” WereGarurumon said, now focused on Kudamon.
“Yes. You have my word.”
“Prove it.”
Alex relaxed only slightly at hearing that.
“Alex, take the device in your hand.” Kudamon said as he held it up. “Remember what Seraphimon told us.”
At first, Alex didn't want to move. The power behind WereGarurumon's attack...
“Why the hesitation?” WereGarurumon asked after some seconds.
“It is not because we are lying. Only because, as you can plainly see, what you did before scared him.”
WereGarurumon gave a 'Hrrmp' in response. Alex felt a touch of disgust hit his stomach.
Once he broke his attention away from WereGarurumon, Alex reached for the device. As before, it sounded an alarm when he was close to it, and at the sound, WereGarurumon adjusted his posture, curling his clawed fingers.
“No tricks, understand?”
“It is not a trick. Seraphimon knows to check on us if this device sounds that alarm.”
A moment later, Alex took the device in his paw. It continued to make the alarm sound, but suddenly on the screen came text neither he nor Kudamon had seen before now.
– Device Lockdown --
And then, only seconds later, the device turned off and stopped making noise.
“What happened?” Kudamon asked.
“...Lockdown.” Alex managed to get out.
“Lockdown?”
“What's that mean?” WereGarurumon asked.
“I have no idea. I was not aware these devices had such a state.”
“And yet you try and pass yourself off as...”
“We are not threats, to you or to others. We are just in a unique situation that needs time to correct.”
WereGarurumon didn't immediately reply in favor of looking around. “I see no hint of Seraphimon.”
“Alex, let me see that device. Maybe I can unlock it.”
Alex crouched slowly and let Kudamon reclaim it. He attempted everything he could think of as quick as possible, but the device stayed off. Alex's heartrate rose every second they got no response.
“I've seen enough.” WereGarurumon said after a time, raking his claws down the tree's trunk when he was finished.
“Do not attack him again, WereGarurumon. I will do everything in my power to stop you if you try.” Kudamon said, his small body now in front of Alex's.
WereGarurumon refrained from growling in response. Alex in the meantime thought he heard something from the device and looked down at it.
The screen was still black.
As if in response to his action, the WereGarurumon closed in on the device, and then snagged not only it, but Kudamon as well.
“Let me go.” Kudamon demanded.
“You're in no position to demand a thing from me.”
Kudamon growled in response, and Alex saw his body start to glow. “Zekkoushou,” he said just before Alex shielded his eyes.
The flash didn't move WereGarurumon an inch; it just made him angry. A second later, he hurled the device far into the distance behind Alex, and then did the same to Kudamon.
Alex pivoted to watch where his partner flew; he couldn't see the device anymore. Without thinking, he started running after Kudamon, only for WereGarurumon to grab him and hold him back. His thoughts flashed back to when he was attacked by Shane, and his emotions welled in his head and stomach.
“Whatever you are, I'm dealing with you, and you alone.”
Alex responded by raking his claws against any part of WereGarurumon's body he could reach. Though he made pained sounds in response, unlike Shane, he didn't let go, only tighten his grip, even when he was bitten on the arm.
With barely any effort, WereGarurumon got Alex's teeth out of his arm, then held his muzzle closed with his paw, blocking his eyesight in the process. All Alex could do then was wish he had Kudamon by his side.
As WereGarurumon muttered about getting treated by Lilamon, the noise Alex thought he'd heard reached him again. A moment later, WereGarurumon said aloud, “What the?”
Seconds later, WereGarurumon made a pained sound and lurched forward; he dropped Alex to the ground in response. As he lay in the grass, Alex focused on WereGarurumon, who was looking around for what, Alex assumed, had struck him.
Without warning, he was struck again, this time from the front. Something Alex could barely see rammed WereGarurumon backwards and into the tree's trunk with a hard 'smack', the impact causing severed branches to fall to the ground.
“Kudamon?” Alex said, now looking around himself.
What appeared now between him and WereGarurumon wasn't Kudamon, or the white-masked fox form his partner had taken before. It was a horse like creature, dressed in green, white, and gold, with a red horn on its head.
It looked back at him with dead serious looking eyes, and then nodded before turning back to WereGarurumon, who was struggling to get back up.
“I told you not to attack him again, WereGarurumon,” Kudamon said. “Now stand down, or I will cut you down.”
When WereGarurumon had regained his composure, one arm stayed wrapped around his chest. Kudamon lowered his body in response, ready to charge again.
“ENOUGH!”
Alex recognized the thunderous voice immediately. Kudamon and WereGarurumon both looked in its direction, followed by himself.
Seraphimon had arrived.
He stayed quiet until his boots touched the ground. “That's enough, from both of you.”
WereGarurumon's response never came. Instead, Kudamon said, “My apologies, Seraphimon, but I had no choice.”
“You have no need to apologize. Let us simply settle this misunderstanding.” Seraphimon then beckoned WereGarurumon to approach him. Although Alex was hoping he's be chastised for his actions, Seraphimon simply held up a gauntleted hand and healed him. “Kudamon was speaking the truth, WereGarurumon. The human you see is in another form that this world does not recognize, hence his Virus status.”
WereGarurumon again gave no response, only a look at Alex which mixed confusion, apprehension, and a bit of regret.
Kudamon meanwhile released his new form and returned to his original one, taking the device in his tail again. The data he'd used to make his new form was absorbed back into the device.
“Is something the matter?” Seraphimon asked of WereGarurumon.
“Not really.” WereGarurumon continued to stare at Alex and Kudamon for several more seconds, before beginning to move towards them again. Alex tucked his tail and took a step back before Kudamon spoke up, telling him to calm down.
When WereGarurumon was within a few feet of him, he looked him over once more, and got his scent again. Eventually, a smile broke into his once angered muzzle, and he extended his right paw.
“Sorry about all that,” he said.
