Japanese basically has three character sets - Hiragana (used for native words, particularly verbs and when pronunciation needs to be shown), Katakana (used for loanwords, animal and plant names, foreign names, accents, onomatopoeia and emphasis), and Kanji (often used for content words, for longer phrases, and when space is at a premium). Kanji is based on the Mandarin character set, as it was first introduced to Japan by Buddhist missionaries from China.
