Summer, 1423
That left the rearguard. Chagraff had positioned the last five hundred Arcadian troops on the field with a single bombards atop a prominent little hillock dominating the Great River Road below it. As Jayna and Mera took to the air to harass and slow the victorious legions swarming over the land, the Rusan rode up to Cutler, who had joined up with his remaining organized defenders.
“You are to hold here as long as possible, so the rest of the army can retreat!” Chagraff yelled. “Abandon the gun if you need to, but delay Anderson’s legions however long you can. The dragon will help protect you when it is your turn to escape.”
Cutler saluted. “I understand commander.”
The troops watched as Chagraff rode away. They were well armed, all equipped with gonnes, and defended by the small piece atop a good position.
There was still no chance for them to win.
Oevcn and Athur were among the soldiers of the rearguard, ramming in their powder and waiting. Athur was as uneasy as the rest of the unit, nervously awaiting the stream of enemy troops heading their way. Oevcn of course was mostly oblivious and grinning like a lark.
“Oh boy! A fight coming up!” I can’t wait!” The cyno enthusiastically quipped as he drew out his slow-burning matchsticks and lit the first.
“Oh you’ll soon be getting all the fight you can handle.” Athur muttered to himself before asking Oevcn. “Do you recall how to use this gonnes?”
“Yep! Ram in fist of powder, drop in the ball, wick, ignite, three seconds to aim.”
“Good. Be safe lad. These things can still explode on you.”
“Don’t worry! I'll bring myself glory and honor!"
Athur rolled his eyes, having heard that comment a dozen times already. “Here’s your chance.” He replied as a regiment of Imperial Hobelars appeared out of the rolling landscape.
Flush with victory, the horsemen charged quickly down the road, eager to tear up the wreckage of the retreating army. Cutler’s troops- hidden among the trees-waited, their commander holding their fire with a raised arm. Not until the horsemen were fifty feet away did the arm drop. Oevcn immediately lit his wick with his match and aimed at a rider bearing the Imperial flag. A few seconds later and the hillside erupted with fire, downing dozens of horses and men from the hobelars below. The cyno was thrown back by the recoil from his handcannon, but as he waved away the smoke and stared down at the road, he found that the Imperial flag-bearer had been unhorsed and lay sprawled upon the road.
“Whoo!” Oevcn cried out in triumph.
The other Arcadians had already fired a second volley at the Imperials thrown into confusion below, striking down another dozen horsemen; most of the survivors broke off and retreated, harassed by a third volley as well as rounds from the lone artillery piece that were able to knock down ten horsemen with a single shot. A single brave Imperial horseman attempted to charge the hilltop position himself, getting halfway up before getting riddled with a dozen balls.
“We won!” The cyno cried out, only for a hand to snap his muzzle shut. Athur shook his head.
“Please, Oevcn.”
Only minutes later, hundreds of victorious Imperial soldiers grew from the contours of the land. Warned by the surviving cavalry, they knew better than to be ambushed. Still these units came on quickly and with some disorder, hoping to simply overrun the rearguard and continue on with the pursuit.
Again Cutler’s troops fired and now continued firing at will, the bombard roaring out every few minutes, Oevcn firing off his gonne as soon as he loaded it. Balls now flew back in response, soon joined by bolts and then arrows, some of which began striking the defenders. A comrade gasped and tumbled besides Athur and the cyno, a bolt sticking out of his eye, causing Athur to gulp and push his helm lower over his head, before doing the same to his companion’s helm. A contingent of Imperial men-at-arms, wielding maces and morningstars attempted to rush the defenders, but the bombard landed several devastating blasts at point bank range, and most of the survivors were cut down by gonnefire before they retreated.
It had now been about 30 minutes, and the rearguard had managed to hold off the pursuers along the immediate line of retreat. However, a fourth of the rearguard was also dead, and the remaining troops were starting to run low on ammunition. General Anderson was also not blind to the force holding off his forces, and soon shells were landing upon the hilltop. The defenders hugged the earth, Athur pushing Oevcn down into it besides him. For ten minutes the Imperial bombardment continued, before finally, 3000 Imperial troops appeared and began advancing in an unbroken line up the steep slope scattered with bodies.
Cutler took one look at the new attacking wave and removed his helmet to wipe his brow.
“We’ve done what we can, lads. Now see to your own safety.”
And with that, he put back his helm, turned around, and began jogging down the hillside. After only a moment’s pause, most of the remaining defenders followed suit, some of the defenders carrying the wounded, while the bombard crew began spreading powder around their artillery piece to ignite.
Soon, there was only a single unfallen figure atop the hilltop.
Tightly clutching his smoking gonne, Oevcn looked back at his fleeing defenders in shock.
“We need to hold them off!”
Athur was in the rear of the retreating rearguard. “We can’t beat them, so we need to go!”
The cyno stood proudly, slamming the butt of his weapon against the ground.
“I am Oevcn the Brave! I won’t run!”
“You’ll be Oevcn the Dead if you don’t run!” Athur called back as he disappeared into the fields of barley.
The cyno took at look at the fleeing Arcadians, then at the mob of thousands of Dominionists rapidly ascending the hill and bearing down upon him.
Then Oevcn the Brave took to his heels and fled as well.
