Kyle and his family had spent their last week of summer in Hawaii.
The day before returning home, they visited Pearl Harbor and saw the USS Arizona Memorial.
"Over there," his father pointed out, "that's where it all began for us. That is where the war started for us. Just beneath the memorial is where the Arizona rests. And within her so many men who were lost."
Kyle and Regina looked in awe at the long white structure that stood before them in the harbor. Kyle could almost see the attack happening before his eyes.
They bought tickets and were ferried out to the memorial. Once there, they saw the list of names engraved on the wall. There were 1,177 names in total.
Kyle and Regina looked over the railing and down at the wreck. It was quite clearly visible beneath the bright blue waters. There was a thin rainbow trail of oil on the surface. Even after more than 80 years, the Arizona still bleeds fuel from her crippled hull.
Their father sat silently as he gazed down at the wreck. Being a former soldier himself, he knew he had to pay his respects. Martin saluted the lost comrades. Kyle and Regina took notice, and they too raised their arms.
