To try to break out of the monotony of drawing the same handful of characters over and over again, I decided to dive into the depths of The Archive, and rediscovered Dougal Duncan, a chubby, nerdy high-schooler.

Dougal definitely qualifies as a long-forgotten character, as the last time I drew him was in 2018.
He doesn't have a great deal of characterization, but he's a pretty stereotypical nerdy gamer. Pretty much every bit of art he featured in had him holding a handheld game that resembled a Game Boy or Game Boy Color--that was "retro" even back then, if I do ever update his handheld it's a toss-up between giving him a smartphone, something like a Steam Deck or Switch, or like a 3DS or something... or maybe he'll just keep it old school and keep playing on that old Game Boy, since I get the feeling the robust construction and simple button layout is ideal for clumsy chunky donkey hands. The other art I have of him features him leaning on an arcade cabinet, standing in front of his very standard house and waving cheerfully, and in his debut from before I pinned down his age, posing in his room by his PC in a pair of briefs sporting pixelated unicorns. Retro gaming seems to be in his blood.
He's a senior in high school, and his best friend is the small nerdy deer guy Devon, another character I sort of abandoned around the same time as Dougal. While fairly quiet and reserved and passive, I imagine anybody that attempts to bully Dougal never makes that mistake a second time, owing to his large size and innate donkey strength. Of course, as many are probably aware, donkeys take no shit whatsoever from predators and I have seen plenty of clips of donkeys beating up coyotes and hyenas, so I imagine that Dougal has no reservations about imitating the moves in one of his fighting games and through his sheer size laying out just about any would-be bully in a single blow should he be pushed to that point. I imagine for the most part though he's quite passive and timid and tries to avoid conflict unless it's entirely necessary.
I remember when I first designed him back in 2016, I was going back and forth on him being a freshman in college or a senior in high school, and high school won out because I liked the idea of him being friends with Devon. Devon just seemed like the type to be interested in computers and tech stuff to the point where he'd be on the school's A/V team, and he'd probably appreciate having Dougal at his side to do the heavy lifting. In turn, Devon would definitely help Dougal connect his gaming consoles to TVs around the school for some impromptu tournaments and stuff, and probably even visit's Dougal's house to help him hook up his new consoles and computer peripherals when that would require getting into spaces that a large donkey might struggle to squeeze into (assuming, of course, that Dougal wouldn't just lift his computer desk or entertainment center solo to make room to hook stuff up, of course).
A lot of my characters, art of them, and descriptions of them seem to invoke a bygone era, at some point I decided that my worldbuilding, at least for terrestrial settings, is likely set in roughly 2008 and some rough equivalent to the United States--yet a lot of downright "futuristic" technology like SSDs and smartphones would still exist, somehow. I guess it's not super relevant, just know that the school is probably still rocking aging 4:3 CRT monitors and they might *still* be watching Bill Nye the Science Guy on VHS in science class because that's something I am legitimately nostalgic for. Maybe Dougal and Devon can team up and help install the new flat-screen TVs in the classrooms and have Hijinks Ensue at some point.
I also liked the idea of Dougal's size and weight leading to shenanigans, and I never got around to drawing it but the idea that him parking his oversized rump in the middle of one of the lunchroom benches would make it bow under his weight amused me quite a bit at the time, as did the idea of him dropping something and bending over to retrieve it, only to split his pants. I'm sure at least one laptop or phone or handheld game has met its demise under his rear end as he absentmindedly sits on it or forgets he had it in his back pocket. A lot of the awkward scenarios he'd find himself in would definitely be centered around his size, but not just his weight, as he is quite tall even before accounting for his ears and the idea of him towering over teachers (or bullies, or rude jocks) while meekly looking down at them comes to mind.
Times seem to have changed quite a bit, I remember when even in mainstream cartoons aimed at children, it was commonplace for child characters to be seen being bullied, in their underwear, etc. but now I feel like an adult artist drawing characters under the age of 18 at all is frowned upon, and doing anything with Dougal that might be seen as even *remotely* fetish-related, like being overweight and bending a bench or receiving a wedgie or pantsing from a bully or being caught in his Nerd Cave wearing nothing but his favorite underoos featuring some characters from a game or TV series he likes might be downright controversial. I recall a discussion with a friend a while back gave me bad vibes, like that context is irrelevant and there's no longer any difference between "nerd gets pantsed by bully" or "fat kid rips pants at school" or "haha parent or sibling or friend burst into teen's room when they are getting dressed" or the "oh shit I am at school in my underwear dream" type scenarios, and actual Inkbunny Behavior™️.
I was also concerned that he might be confused for Dom Duncan, due to their visual similarity, and the fact that Dom is likely far more familiar to anyone still following my art in 2024 and beyond. All of my art of Dougal save for two feature him wearing a red shirt, and of course I have a favored color palette for donkeys that tends to have them all being a grey-tan color with light colored muzzles and ears and bellies and brownish hair, and of course being quite chubby. They both have the surname Duncan, and both of their names start with a D, and Dougal even had a scraggly little "beard" in most of his old art that I updated into the same sort of chin-beard/soul patch sort of thing a few of my characters have nowadays.
I am not sure of the actual familial relationship, even with "Duncan" being my stock donkey surname it's retroactively pretty clear that Dom and Dougal are related by blood. While the simplest explanation is that Dougal is one of Dom's innumerable cousins owing to just how large the Duncan family seems to be, I also like the idea that Dougal may be Dom's youngest brother or half-brother. This would require figuring out a lot of things in the background, namely who their parents are and how they came to be in their respective places in life (Dom is married and has a kid and seems to work on and maybe even own a small farm and clearly lives in a rural setting, while Dougal seems to live in the suburbs), but I don't think the age difference between the roughly 30-year-old Dom and the 17- or 18-year-old Dougal is actually that extreme, as a similar age gap exists between myself and my youngest sibling in real life.
Regardless of if they are siblings or merely cousins, I imagine the relationship between Dom and Dougal is a bit distant but still pleasant, with them each being busy with their respective lives and not constantly being in touch with each other, but getting along very well when they do meet up, despite how different they are.
