Here is the finished illustration, with keylighting, motes, etc. My eyes feel as if they are going to fall out of my head.

Its harder with the smaller tablets, but basically it comes down to practicing your line movements. If you look at my WIP sketches, you can see that I build my illustrations from literally thousands of quickly drawn lines. I draw from the shoulder, and the larger tablet is a must. even the Medium I have now isn't enough, which is why I'm going after the EXTRA LARGE pretty soon. One of my monitors 'sploded the other night, and needs to be replaced, so I'll need a new Wacom also, because my current one is a 4:3 size, and I'll be buying a widescreen monitor to replace the 2X 20 inch setup I'm using now.
The bottom line is: You're probably drawing too slowly. Get a copy of Alias Sketchbook Pro- they used to literally GIVE it away with copies of some of the popular 3D arts magazines from the UK, but the way to get it now is to just download the trial version from Autodesk. Its a full version, and it saves just like the paid version. Only caveat is, it only runs about 15 days or so, but only the days you use it count! I've had a copy of the higher end version running on my laptop for almost a year now, and I haven't even finished using the trial yet!
So far, its the ONLY drawing software that can keep up with my hands. I use it for all my sketching, and then I import into Photoshop.

Yeah, Idlevalley described a pretty darkly lit scene for me to illustrate. I pulled back on the dirt on Cherish- it just ended up making him a bit too grubby looking. I figured if he had just climbed out of bed he might be a bit more clean. That doesn't stop him from rooting around on his dirt floor, though!
The original lighting described would have left Cherish relatively invisible in the background, so I took some liberties. I also dropped the teddy bear- It wasn't working for me… We'll have to see what Idle thinks of all this!

You're probably long gone, but it's funny, i remember seeing this pic way back in the day, and never thinking you ask what it was the character seemed to be about to lick, until suddenly it popped into my mind and I spent an evening looking for this pic.
Maybe if you come back some day, I'll find out the answer.
