Upon their return to the Northern Gate at the edge of Sakura Town, it was wide open and a welcoming crowd of townspeople cheered at Hikaru's victory. Sasaki ran up to him, wrapping her arms around his body and enveloping him in an affectionate embrace. Their noses nuzzled together, both blushing as they gazed lovingly into each other's eyes. "I heard my favorite marten samurai has turned into a hero and legend of Sakura Town. I'm so proud of you," she praised, resting one paw on his robust chest while she playfully tousled the tufts of fur around his kimono collar with the other.
"I'm a legend now?" He queried, oblivious that his battle had been recorded in the town's history books.
"Yes, and you should stay here with me, defending the town instead of wandering around in the wilderness. The townspeople would like their hero to remain too."
After a brief moment of consideration, Hikaru decided it would be best to settle down together with her in Sakura Town. With a sparkle in her eyes, she sealed the decision with a kiss, both closing their eyes as they rejoiced in the romantic moment. Yuki quietly excused herself from the scene, teleporting away to allow them to cherish this part of their lives as a day of both victory and love undisturbed. As their lips parted, a figure emerged from the cheering crowd - another marten with creamy yellow fur.
"Hikaru?" A familiar voice tenderly called out to him.
"M-mom?" He stuttered to his surprise. It was his long-lost mother, finally having a heartwarming reunion after all the years apart. Overwhelmed with emotion, he tearfully hugged his mother, his bushy tail wagging behind displaying how happy he was to see her again. Following up on the warm reunion, his mother requested to borrow Hikaru from Sasaki for the evening to catch up. Taking him through the streets of town for a relaxing stroll, she recounted the days after the destruction of Nodoka Town.
Fleeing the fiery scene of Nodoka Town with some of the other refugees, they needed somewhere to stay. Since Sakura Town's way of life was familiar to her, she led the group there where it was safer for everyone and easier to fit in. At her parents' home which stood empty until her return, she settled down with the other refugees, tidying up the furniture and rooms to make it a pleasant home for them to reside together.
Being apart from Hikaru, she had missed him through the many seasons, yearning to see his face once more. One of the more artistic refugees recreated a portrait of Hikaru, having seen him sitting around outside of the snack shop every day. The painting gave her solace in her time of need, bringing a warm smile to her face and tears rolling down her face once she had seen it. The portrait was the one thing she treasured, hanging up in the house proudly for all to appreciate the hard work put into it, and to cheer herself up whenever she thought of her son again.
Two months ago, when Sasaki arrived, she had mistaken her for Hikaru as she was a marten too. Instead of drowning in embarrassment, the two martens ended up with striking up a detailed conversation together. She shared that she had feelings for another marten, a yellow-furred brave and bold samurai in a sky-blue kimono, Hikaru. Originally, he had arrived at the Samurai Sanctuary with the intention of training with the samurai master, trembling in fear and clinging onto a white cat doll made of various pieces of fabric stitched together. Developing their strength and skill together through thick and thin, he grew to be a more confident warrior, becoming daring and adventurous.
The recount of Hikaru's development brightened her mood once she heard his name spoken aloud, filling her with hope that she would see him eventually. And now, she has. Taking a good look at her son now from head to tail, he had grown significantly from the day they were separated.
After mentioning the doll, Hikaru wanted to show her mother that he had kept through the years safely, waiting for her to finish doing so. Asking her mother to wait there for a moment, he whipped out the Masamune and dashed to Sasaki's place to retrieve his belongings, returning to her with his cotton pouch slung across his body. When he pulled out the cat doll, it was not stitched from rags like before. Instead, it was now made of a luxuriously silky-soft material, as soft as the fur that covered them. Both he and his mother were shocked at the new-looking doll. Yuki teleported in front of them to reveal herself, surprising his mother beyond measure, her mouth dropping in front of the very figure the doll was based on.
"So you're the one who took care of my precious son. Thank you so much," she said, showing gratitude to her. Without speaking a word, Yuki nodded in response and winked cheekily at both of them before opening a portal to disappear somewhere else, leaving him with the exquisite cat doll as a parting gift.
His mother shared that she had the intention to make a doll for his eighth birthday, just weeks before the unforeseen attacks. On the night she had gathered enough leftover materials from sewing his kimonos to create the doll, she had a dream of a white cat saving him from a raging fire. The next morning, she immediately started sewing up the doll in the image of the white cat from the dream. As for the raging fire, the dream foretold Nodoka Town being burned down. When the premonition came true weeks later, she searched desperately for young Hikaru to save him from the devastated town. But after everyone had left, she lost hope, believing that he had perished in the inferno.
Hikaru corrected her, adding that it was the white cat sorcerer they saw earlier, Yuki, who defended him from the intruder. He had witnessed his father's demise at the paws of the intruder, right before she appeared and rescued him. Using her powers, he was teleported far away from the town where he was hidden by the trees, and thus, was gone from the village without a trace. His mother looked at him in amazement after learning his side of the story.
The mere mention of his father triggered something in his mother's mind, and she wanted to show Hikaru something. Bringing him out of town to a lone Sakura tree on a hill under the full moon, they approached a weathered tombstone with his father's name engraved into it. She shared that she had returned to the ruins of Nodoka Town to revisit the house, in dismay upon discovering the remains of a once great warrior.
Lighting three incense sticks and leaving a note in the form of a scroll, she wished that if Hikaru was still alive and well, he would know where she had gone. Relocating the ashes and burying them on the hill they were on, she knew that her significant other fought valiantly, his sacrifice never forgotten. Under his name, the tombstone had words carved into the surface by her, honoring his father as a noble samurai. Looking at his mother, he pulled out the tanto he had been passed down to him, it reflected the yellow shine of the full moon. With the knife in his paws, he promised to continue his father's legacy as a samurai, his destiny to protect Sakura Town and those he held dear with the blade of the Masamune.
