Kitsune are quite random, yep, and you are right - they love to trick people and pretending to be dumb gives them many amusing opportunities to play pranks on clueless humans!
Important thing is that they don't like vile and cruel attitude. In other cases their tricks will be harmless (they can still be embarrassing and humiliating but there won't be any danger for life or health)
