In my head it's more like he doesn't realize the princess has been put in the place of his horse. He still thinks she's in her place. At least that's what I got from the commissioner's idea. But I'm more than happy that people interpret it in the way they find most fun!
Neat! It's good the princess is happier now(and gets to be a horse).
Consider the following epilogues:
* Horse becomes a unicorn, and reveals he was the princess the whole time now that he can speak.
* Warrior becomes a horse(mare?) and their relationship deepens.
* They are deeply injured on the battlefield, and merge into a centaur to continue the fight together.

Yeah! Google 'Princess Medea' from Dragon Quest VIII. She's the hero's main love interest but spends entirety of the game as a horse pulling the carriage containing party's equipments, due to a curse at the start. At least she's happy that she's with the hero and is able to help the party.
