Original Species: Bristled Hippogryph
The Bristled Hippogryph is a species of herbivorous hippogryph native to the eastern grasslands of Elysium. Unlike its smaller relative (the Elysian Hippogryph), this species is flightless and took on the role of a medium-sized, nimble herbivore. At first, it seems like these adaptations would put it in direct competition with Lagolopes, but a closer look at this hippogryph's diet puts that concern aside. While Lagolopes, and other rabbit relatives, are grazers, the Bristled Hippogryph is a browser; it feeds on grass seed (which it plucks directly from the stalks) as well as the fruits and leaves of the local shrubs. With this dietary adjustment, it can coexist with its long-eared contemporaries.
Aside from being flightless, the Bristled Hippogryph differs from its flying relative in another way: instead of a mane and tail comprised of feathers, it has bristly quills. These are pretty sharp and pointy which may indicate some form of protection against predators... even if the throat and back are still unprotected. More research and observation need to be done to fully understand this creature.
