Oh, do give them a look, they're among my favorite books. The Dresden Files is basically a supernatural detective series, but it touches on a lot of other stuff too. I've heard them described as Harry Potter for adults, but that's a bit off. It's more like Harry Potter crossed with Buffy. The thirteenth book in the series is coming out in a few weeks, and word of god also holds that there'll be at least twenty three books or so in the series, probably closer to twenty-five now because of some changes he's made.
Also, a zombie T. Rex shows up at one point. That should tell you how awesome this series is in a nutshell.
PS: If you're looking for more traditional fantasy fare, the author has also done Codex Alera, a series about magical Romans with elemental spirits battling giant wolfmen and yeti and invading bug people. Okay, maybe not so traditional.

Ah yes, Negi's magic staff, that was handed down to him from his father, a man who had supposedly mastered a thousand techniques but only knew like, six, but could still beat off an entire army all by himself just to give joy to the woman he loved.
Watch, all of that would go over Negi's head.
