RIP Luciano, April 13th 2015 - November 4th 2024
A fanart in honor of Luciano, who wasn't my cat but still found a way into my heart, and eventually inspired the character design of my OC Senanca.
Full story: About 5 years ago, I was working on the reboot of my webcomic "Luminous Red", where (among other things) its anthro character designs needed some changes. One of my main characters, Senanca, a mobster boss, used to be this weird fantasy design among more specific animal character designs. For the reboot, I decided that every character needed to be specific animals for better harmony.
And since Senanca is my very special boy, he needed a specific animal that was very special too.
His old fantasy design was a mixture between cat, goat, and weasel, with pink eyes, and I decided to narrow it down to just cat. Except keeping the pink eyes as some sort of trademark look of his. But Senanca's cat breed could not just be any normal cat breed.
Originally, I wanted Senanca to be a black sphynx cat. But the problem was that I wanted to keep his hairdo and goaty from the old design, but the hair looked too unnatural on a sphynx. So I was browsing other cats online for inspiration. And then one day, I came across this Instagram account with photos of someone's cornish rex cat, named Luciano, and inspiration struck immediately: https://www.instagram.com/lucianokingofrex/
And it was only THAT specific cornish rex cat too, no other cornish rex that I browsed elsewhere out of curiosity later on. Only Luciano had this certain unique face and aura about him which no other cats of his breed had. A calm, mysterious, polite personality, being friends with both cats and dogs, yet still with this feline fierceness during playtime with toys.
My special boy cat was found.
And that's how Luciano ended up as an inspiration behind Senanca's new design, and it fit Senanca's personality smoothly.
Sadly, Luciano passed away due to aggressive melanoma. Hearing those news gave me a heart ache. Although I never got to meet Luciano in real life, I enjoyed the photography and videos of him. Very cool cat.
