Basically we're multiple people who share one body irl but we each have our own in-character. Even irl we're different people, we just happen to be headmates (like roommates, but in the same head!)
There are, to our knowledge, 2 types of systems: Multiple and Median. As a whole ours is a Multiple, but Yoobette and Geshiko are a Median System within the full Multiple System. A multiple system is where we're all different people, "alters" is the term to use. A median system is closer to being a single person, but with different sides or "facets" to who they are.
