Kalan Gwav, Allantide, The Feast [of Saint Allan/The First Day of Winter], celebrated on the 31st of October, before the start of winter and the new year. Mil, Chelsea and one of the twins here are expressing a few of the different ways people acknowledge the celebration. Mil as a pellar is wearing a wreath and the national tartan, while these individually and together are not restricted to pellar, they are a fair indicator, and most will be wearing a certain symbol on a clasp or brooch if they are pellar. Otherwise Mil is fairly minimal in his outfit, some go further, with complex outfits in the form of druids, spirits, animals and gods, common topics are images of death and plantlife, but animals associated with the time of year are also common. Chelsea as part of her religion doesn't engage with the druidic elements of the season by upbringing, but here she is wearing a necklace gifted to her by Mil that crosses that line with her own beliefs in recognition of her starting her work with him. [Her Religion] traditionally only cover the face, with a scarf, veil or simple mask to obscure the breath from ghosts of the departed who are travelling abroad that night, who would be distressed or insulted by the reminder that they're dead. Her brother (brothers, they're twins, one is off screen) would be doing the same thing, but this year he gets to wear a costume.
Chelsea's family are not strictly Against (childrens) costumes, but as they haven't traditionally partaken in the celebrations outside of their own community, it's not come up before. This time Mil and Chelsea made the two boys ghost costumes out of sheets, they might be suitably last-minute and cliché, but at least there's nothing there to get them in trouble with mum and dad. For children part of the fun is guising, dressing up and getting gifts of food or trinkets from households or generous shopkeepers taking advantage of the late night gatherings. Typically this takes the form of polished apples, but also biscuits, cakes and other seasonal treats. The largest of the apples is put under the child's pillow and eaten the following morning for good luck. Adults take this opportunity to gift the largest and most polished apples they can get to loved ones, friends and family members for the same reason.
It is likely Kalan Gwav, pre-Event, was much like modern Halloween, however in the years immediately following the event, a lot of modern traditions became faded in public memory, the New Year moved back to the 1st of November and Kalan Gwav became an important celebration of the autumn harvest, changing seasons, start of the new year and fairwell to the old, during this time Druids are more likely to come close to people, and may even tell fortunes to those brave enough to approach them. If the weather is amenable heath burns are performed at this time, under druid supervision and mutual celebration, and where they can't be, bonfires are lit. Druids usually withdraw from view during the winter, so for many this is the last time to ask for boons, good fortune or love before the following spring.
More character driven notes: this is probably the first time Chelsea has gone out with Mil to a festival, it takes place between her becoming his apprentice/aide and them actually becoming a couple, or at least hooking up for the first time, idk if it’s technically a consummation of anything at that point or not tbh This is probably also the first time she’s been to Kalan Gwav at all outside of intracommunity stuff, she’s probably reached the point of being anxious, but trusting Mil enough to let him lead her into things she’s still not sure about. Her brothers are too young to be that self-conscious yet, and they’re just excited to be ghosts and get snacks. They will probably be interrupted a bunch of times tonight with people wanting Mil to tell their fortune. But luckily for him there are Way more interesting and dressed up pellar around to ask that of, so hopefully he won’t be bothered too much.
