Though impossible to know for sure, I would suspect a Yoshi's tongue would be more closely related to a chameleon tongue than a frog tongue.
Both use sticky saliva (frogs for sure have reversible sticky saliva, which I wish we understood how that works), but are attached at the front of the mouth. Chameleon tongues are attached to the back at the hyoid bone, more like ours and how it's presented.
They have two sets of muscles: one for extending the tongue, one for retracting the tongue. It also has a "sticky pad" that would be where prey attaches. They tend to aim for the head for minimal resistance and often close their eyes one retraction to protect their eyes from resisting prey.
So fascinating!

That's the wonderful about instincts: the brain / individual doesn't have to know how to act with them, they just do!
How much of the tongue is voluntary, who knows? Maybe all a new Yoshi has to do is "aim" and "will" it, with the rest just happens without conscious control!
