Well, any paint is going to harden if you don't brush it out properly; what I did was, I dabbed a bit of paint on my brush, scrubbed it into the fur, and brushed it a few times with a slicker brush. Just keep brushing it as it dries, and it should be okay.
I also used fabric markers at some point; the one I tested didn't wash out in cold water, but it's probably a good idea to test any material you want to use.
