Jordan Jasper, workaholic journalist, waved away the server and the menu he was bringing. "Cup of black coffee and a croissant," the deer insisted.
"You really should try the sushi place," Shelly said, her chopsticks hovering over her lunch, deciding where to start.
Jordan regarded the sushi platter not with disgust but with indifference. It seemed too fancy for her palette when all she needed was some caffeine and carbs to keep her going.
"Some other time," Jordan lied.
Her busty otter friend shrugged. Then she grinned and leaned forward. "So, how is life treating you lately? Meet any interesting people?"
Jordan pulled out her little notebook and flipped through it. "I have an informant willing to give me the dirt on the Orly Gang. Meeting them this evening."
"Jordan!" scolded Shelly. "We have these lunch meetings so at least one part of your social circle isn't journalism or superhero biz!"
Jordan closed her notebook and slipped it back inside a jacket pocket. "I met a cute mayor's aide the other day. I was checking into something but I also checked him out."
"Conversation topic allowed!" Shelly said. She selected a piece of sushi and popped it in her mouth with a healthy dollop of wasabi. "Dish, girl! Give me those details! The who, what, why, where, when and - if applicable - the how!"
Jordan gave those hot deets.
Shelly was right. It was refreshing to have a low-stakes interaction.
And when the coffee was drunk and the sushi was eaten and the two friends were ready to go their separate ways, Shelly made sure to schedule their next lunch meeting before letting Jordan go.

Just thought it'd be fun to get a picture of Shelly and Jordan being friends.
Jordan needed a lifeline back to normality and Shelly is kind enough to be that for her. Even though she had just as weird a childhood as Jordan, her day to day life is firmly in the slice of life/college hijinxes genre and not superhero/investigative journalism.
Also, Shelly's first picture was posted in my gallery on New Year's Day. Happy anniversary, Shelly!
She's going to be the first and last post of 2024. What a lucky gal!
