Should've posted these earlier, but here's how Nistle the pasal and Chello the umbrite first met and found out what they really were. So their species, pasals and umbrites, had been at war for centuries, taking long-distance shots at one another with various projectile weapons. Both species essentially had a 'shoot on sight' mentality regarding the other. Well one day Nistle and Chello were firing at one another outside of The Tower of Fate and Fortune, when they were captured by the towerfolk who brought them inside to ask them why in the hell they were exchanging fire right outside their front door.
What happened after that? Well in this little comic we find out that pasals and umbrites are actually two halves of a singular species called the bandibel, which has the ability to split in two, and later join back up to share memories, know-how, general cuddles, and so on. And these two are unintentionally the first to discover this in hundreds of years.
And here's Nillo the bandibel, made out of Nistle and Chello! Now they both still exist in there, they're essentially piloting their new combined form in stereo, and have access to each other's minds. Think of them like a multi-core processor. Once they calm down a bit they'll figure out they can actually split back apart, but these two very quickly find they like being together, and are then conspiring with the towerfolk on how to unite their two tribes without anyone getting shot.

Physically it's as easy as water. And while there isn't really too much social division among their tribes (i.e., no upper class or lower class but there is generally a division of warrior, farmer, artist) it means mentally you get two lifetimes smashed together in one head. And since it generates near-perfect empathy, both beings in the merger can understand the other's reasoning and decisions.
It can happen. Usually their combined form averages out between their ages, with a mixture of experienced wisdom and youthful exuberance. But again, all depends on the personalities of the two going in.
I can tell you it was a much different experience for the next two, Nistle's big sister Hoora, and Chello's mentor Gan.

It's more they became one being, and the two halves that made it up liked the being they became and what they saw of each other's lives, at least in Nistle and Chello's case, and decided they wanted to stay together.
Some pasals and umbrites casually merge and split and go on to do so with other umbrites and pasals.
Although I would say by the time of the reunion comic Nistle and Chello definitely consider themselves a couple.

If they split apart, they can then merge with other pasals and umbrites. Also they are able to partially split, and then their unmerged parts can partially merge with others.
So for example, say they split their heads, and Chello merges his head to another pasal in order to quickly pass along information, or just be friendly :3
