First post of 2025 wooo! \o/
This started as a simple practice sketch to better learn how to draw horses, but then I went overboard and it became a full blown illustration. XD In any case, I generally suck at drawing non-anthro animals, in particular horses, but since I have a medieval setting I felt it was important to have at least SOME practice regarding them!

This is a scene from Nur's past, back when him, his brother Kor and his father Rahan left their village for the war. The human empire of Laatven tried expanding westwards in the territories of Upper Sirath and those of the Oasis City States, quickly gaining ground. This caused in response an unheard of alliance between all of the local catfolk kingdoms and city states, the desert nomads, and also other human kingdoms, eager to undermine Laatven's egemony. The war lasted three years, during which Nur's brother and father died and Nur himself lost half of his face, but the forces of Laatven were at last defeated and forced to retreat back in the East.
In this sketch here he's still unscathed and a bit too eager to prove himself in battle, even as his assault group is being flanked by some heavy cavalry. He really should move out of the way... :P

I love it! We get more insight into a young Nur. It makes me think his reckless actions are partly responsible for his future face.
The horses look good overall. That kitty commander looks like he might get skewered in the next few seconds. Even if Nur kills that one knight, Nur and company need to get out of there fast.

A rifle like that should be able to do some damage to the rider, horse, or both.
And that's a good horse! Definitely better than some actual medieval artists. https://imgs.classicfm.com/images/2.....7pBmW4KfEcyjc=

thing is, many knew. but the linked pic might be the size of a small book, a book interior drawing. the look of horses was unimportant, more important was to be able to recognize the rider, provided it was an important person.
aside that, most of it was done by monks, not assigned artists. :) their works looked less wonky, usually.

Might this be when Nur's face gets wrecked? I don't remember if you mentioned a super-specific incident yet for when that happened, other than that it happened during the war.
Whatever the case, good job on the horse! You and your gal have both done well in that area. :3
I'm just frustrated with myself that I haven't been like you for my writing, being like "I'm just gonna try to do an exercise with---annnnnd here's a whole freakin' art piece." XD
Maybe I'll pull myself more together soon. Maybe.
Also, gotta love the "SHITSHITSHIT" faces of those retreating/taking cover. :D

Nah, that was a different time, and it was a grenade that caused it.
Thank you so much! :D
Haha I'm not sure this is actually a good thing, it would be best to actually do several useful exercises rather than "wasting time" on a full illustration XD Still, can't complain.
Yes, they know what's up :P

I remember seeing a sketch done by Leonardo da Vinci of a horse's rear end. It was obviously wonky with it's muscle proportions. The caption read 'Horses are hard. Even the great master artist struggled to properly depict them."
Armored horses are the bomb anyway. And Nur probably found that out a second later.
