The forest was so dense and its trees so convoluted that the rivers were the only means to cross it. Luckily, of these the forest had aplenty. While I traveled by boat, especially those sections where my path led downstream, I could just watch the surroundings with nothing else to do but steer the boat clear from any sand banks or tangles of vegetation. Among the latter there was a particularly irritating specimen which was able to block off smaller streams completely, forcing me to drag my boat over it. It was akin to a tree, but growing sideways, with all branches pointing downwards and vanishing in the river sands. The only part resembling leaves were strange growths at its base, looking more like a parasite than part of the plant. They were probably flowers, of a symbiotic lifeform that fed this strange, burrowing tree, possibly with nutrients taken from the surrounding vegetation which wasn't able to provide it with a suitable substrate to reproduce.
