I grew up on the Half Life games, specifically mods for them (Afraid of Monsters ring a bell?). That pink and black checkerboard pattern has always stood for one thing: a missing texture.
The personal things I deal with have a tendency to leave me feeling alien in a sort-- like something is turned off, my code just ever so slightly miswritten. Almost as if I have a missing texture.
