Sedek is so bound to the earth with his magic, he is deeply affected by the seasons and is more dependent on the sun than ordinary people, so to endure and gather strength during the darkest winter season, his body falls into a deep sleep: His hair turns gray and his skin pale and colder, he becomes drowsier and slower until he falls into such a sleep that he does not wake up again for often weeks afterwards. During his sleep his heart pace slows down and his breathing is barely visible.
Sheila is used to it now after over 80 years together, but it takes its toll on having to wait, tend to his body and hope it doesn't last too long. (The cats are hers, but they like to stay close to Sedek as often as they can.)
