The Eiðsvarðar (Algiric), Eísvaroi (Kirasic) or 'Oath Keepers' (translated into English - basically the same etymology as 'Varangian' I know I'm very original) are an elite guard unit in the Theskai Kingdom, recruited from Algirics that have sailed down the Verian Sea to offer their services as mercenaries. These soldiers serve as personal bodyguards for the king, under the assumption that they would be more dependable and loyal than locally-recruited soldiers. Local soldiers have a more direct stake in the kingdom's politics, and are likely to be embedded in a local political faction whose goals may not align with those of the king. Mercenaries, however, are chiefly loyal to gold, and the king of Theskai is a *very* rich man.
Among the most iconic warriors of the Eiðsvarðar are the heavily-armoured dragons that act as shock troops in battle, slaying their foes with axes and venomous fangs, and seemingly feeling no pain from their wounds.
Naturally, the wealth that attracts mercenaries to Theskai attracts many raiders, too, and the adventurous Algirics will attempt to seize that wealth one way or another. By hiring the Eiðsvarðar as mercenaries, the Theskai king turns many warriors that would've otherwise attempted to plunder his kingdom into soldiers loyal to him. As guards stationed in the kingdom's provinces, Eiðsvarðar frequently end up fighting against other Algirics who are going viking across the Verian coast.

Τίς εὐγενέστερος τοῦ ἐκ Βοῤῥἐως δρᾰ́κους τούτου;
Who is nobler than this dragon of the north?
(Thankfully dragons' dorsal frills are quite easy to 'compress' in this setting, so they can just be hidden underneath armour.)
