I think adapting one of the 'fun with liquid oxygen' videos would be appropriate. Ten pounds of charcoal, set the vest on top, a lit cigarette on that, and using a ten-foot reacher, dump a quart of liquid oxygen on it all. Ten seconds later, you'll have a pound of ready-to-cook coals, and the vest will be properly sterilized. (look up 'liquid oxygen charcoal' to find videos of the process)
