Last week marked the passing of a quiet, soft-spoken man with a mighty voice. Not only was Peter Yarrow of the iconic 60's Folk Music trio "Peter, Paul and Mary" (Mary Travers passed away in 2009 https://www.furaffinity.net/view/2803458/ ) But also a lifelong activist for Civil Rights and Social Change through his music.
And so for "Dragon Appreciation Day," here's a salute to the man who showed us that dragons are our friends.
Peter Yarrow: 1938-2025

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain.
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life long friend, Puff could not be brave.
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave.
Fare well dear friend, may your splendors continue ever on.

It actually mildly irritates me that people to this day think Puff The Magic Dragon was an allegory for weed. Mary had to come out and publicly state "If Peter wanted to write a song about marijuana, he'd write a song about marijuana." It's a beautiful song about a kid with an imaginary friend and the inevitability of growing out of it. I hadn't even heard the 420 theory until it was shared in Meet The Parents. I guess just like Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds people will always assume a drug allegory where there is none.
But yeah, RIP Peter Yarrow. My parents played a lot of Peter, Paul and Mary albums when I was a kid and I have to say I'm a fan.

What's amusing is that I've seen a fair number of the people who are all "song X is secretly about drugs!" bend over backwards to deny that "Passage to Bangkok" by Rush is about drugs. (Not only is it packed solid with direct references to various drugs, the trip described is the "overland east" drug tour from the 60s/70s.)
The year was 1996.
A small boy, went to a Peter Paul and Mary Concert.
After that concert, a small boy, waved to Peter Yarrow.
Being the wonderful Human being that he was, Peter Yarrow planted a professional, peace loving kiss on that child's forehead, after my parents held me up.
I was that child.
