Vintage Photo Walkthrough
I got a request for some more info on how I went about getting the 'old photo' look on that last picture I drew, so I figured I'd whip up a quick step-by-step walkthrough just in case anyone else might find it useful too!
The bulk of the piece was done in SAI, but I did the finishing work in Photoshop, which is mostly what this walkthrough covers. Of course there are lots of ways to go about achieving these effects, but if anyone is thinking about making a vintage photo of their own and looking for a place to start, I hope this is helpful!

Coolies! Thanks for the Public Service. A definite 'save' I intend on using later sometime. Artistically though.. MAN that's a good pic, and it's nice to get an insight as to how you work. You've mentioned a few times, something along the lines of 'i cheat' or 'it's all just Photoshop'. Photoshop or not, guy, your attention to details and he levels of it you include in your images is amazing. And, I don't think I realized just how MUCH details and subtle nuances you include in your work. I'm in awe. So, yeah, never sell yourself short when it comes to your skills as an artist. And keep up the good work.
^///^ No problem, and thank you! It's a fair bet that none of us realize how much other artists put into their work, until they open up the hood and show us around. All part of the craft, bringing together all sorts of parts to trick the eye into seeing an entirely different whole!
I can't imagine how much effort goes into yours with all that hatching and texturing, for instance - maybe one day you can reveal your technique for us, too!

When I get the new page of my comic up, I'd like to take a crack at this. :) I dunno if I can emulate with the tools I've got, since I'm a total novice, but I'm gonna give it my best shot.
Any tips for someone who doesn't have Photoshop? I have GIMP and SAI. I'll let you know when my picture is done. <33
Thanks again for doing this for me. :3 I need all the help I can get.

You're quite welcome! From the look of your comics, you're no novice You'll do just fine!
I can't speak for GIMP, but SAI should be able to pull off most of these effects for you :) It can facilitate the fill layer, airbrushing, masks, textures, opacities and layer modes just fine. The hardest parts might be finding some tea stain brushes (Photoshop has a lot of these types of resources available, but there may be some free ones out there for SAI too), and mimicking Photoshop's Size Jitter function. For the latter, with a bit of patience you might be able to approximate the jitter effect by applying varying pressure and coming back along those lines unevenly with an eraser.
If you run into any specific problems, don't hesitate to give a shout Good luck!
