Agreed. Quite an auteur. I've only seen a few of his films (The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Dune, the latter of which he hated and disowned by trying to have his name listed as Alan Smithee) but my dad's always been a big fan since at least Twin Peaks.
I often would play the video clip of Mr. Lynch decrying playing movies on smartphones because you'll "never experience the film" to my friends for laughs, but he was right. You get a much different experience watching a movie on a smartphone with tiny speaker and screen than in a movie theater. We really lost an avant-garde director and auteur.
