For the past few months, I've been working over a personal concept project: [Super Quarth]. One of the big art tasks that I recently completed was a set of ten portrait images for a Rankings screen. This meant I had to invent a handful of new faces, so I opted to just draw them all up normally first so that I'd have guides to work off when converting them all to pixel art — each one at 30×30px resolution (in 8:7 ratio) and a maximum of 15 colors + transparency.
Ironically, the pixel-art portraits ended up having more complex shading than the high-res portraits. After my first pass, each portrait still had palette entries to spare, and the extra shading helped each portrait feel more SNES-like. 30×30px was a surprisingly challenging res to work at!
