A wolf and a mountain lion are each having a bad day, but one’s day is distinctly worse.
This is a real short story I wrote as kind of a warm up. I wasn’t sure about posting it, but after sitting on it for a while I think it’s worth posting.
It’s official. Sam was having the worst day of his life. Someone spilled their drink on him right at the beginning of his shift, but the coffee shop was so busy that he never got a chance to change it. So, he just had to work with cold coffee soaking his work shirt and his fur. Then his replacement never showed up, so he had to work an unexpected double, with a closing shift. After that he missed the last regular bus of the night by seconds. He had to wait 15 minutes for one of the night buses with a different route that would take an extra 20 minutes to get him home. And now, as if his day hadn’t been bad enough, he just got eaten! Some mountain lion got on the bus, walked right up to him, grabbed him, and shoved him down her throat without a word. She didn’t even undress him. He’s just in some random preds stomach, with her juices soaking into his clothes. This wasn’t even supposed to happen to wolves; why him!?
Samantha was having a terrible day. First, she overslept, and had to skip breakfast to make it to her bus on time. Then she found out she got a C on her math test. The coffee shop was swamped, so it took forever. Then someone bumped her, causing her to spill her drink, and the guy at the shop having to remake it. Her friends had to cancel, so she had to go to the movies on her own, and she didn’t have enough money left after the coffee to buy refreshments. After catching a second movie, she had to take the late bus home. And she hadn’t had anything to eat all day.
She saw a cute, if tired looking wolf through the bus window, and decided he looked clean enough to eat. When she walked up to him, she noticed he even smelled like coffee, but he just tasted like bitter coffee grounds, and soap. And, in her hurry, she forgot to undress him, so she’d have his clothes along with his fur to deal with later. And now that she’s walking into her apartment, she remembers she had left overs she was really looking forward to, that would have to wait for tomorrow. She turned to her full stomach and said to the wolf trapped inside, “Your day may have ended poorly, but at least you still had a better day than me.”
Then she relaxed, showered, and went to bed. Feeling a little refreshed, and confident that tomorrow would be better. Afterall, how could tomorrow possibly be worse than what she went through today.
