"There are the dragons everyone thinks dragons all are: violent high-energy menaces with an unhealthy attachment to gems and bullion. And then there all the many many others.

"Such as the Blue High Drifter. Only its larval stage is anything like the classic "Smauglike" dragon. At maturity it takes up a very different life: a great slow entity with ultra-low metabolism, held in the sky by wings that have metamorphosed into vast hydrogen bladders. Its perpetually open maw hosts an ecosystem: birds nest in the holes of its teeth, specialized plant species root in its gums. Every few years the Drifter will lick off and swallow this bounty of flora and fauna; but enough will survive to grow back and continue the cycle.
