It's not supposed to be - it's against health and safety to use sharp swords in battle for obvious reasons.

Of course, but the correct armour for the time period is also worn (padded jacks, some plated). Sharp swords = not happening on a UK re-enactment. If you want to work with bladed weapons, best to look into actual fighting groups.
