Satellite is the creation of a sister project started by a galactic corporation which is owned by a much higher power, specifically with the intent of the artificial hybridization of ‘perfect’ lab grown animal specimens. (Satellite being an infusion of human, bengal tiger, jaguarundi, deep sea dragonfish, and marine iguana DNA.)

He was permanently injured in a test initially designed to mutate him to be stronger than he was previously, but it went horribly wrong when a sudden short circuit of the devices used overloaded the energy output, ending in him being barely hanging on to life.

Though with the introduction of specially designed medical and combative nanomachines into his body (along with several cybernetic implants) he would be able to be kept alive and his disfigurement hidden via the holomask provided by the nanomachines.
