Better Horizons | Tom Nook TF MC
You let out a sigh as you looked over your finances for this month. Things were not looking good right now…
First, the month started off with your car breaking down, and your insurance wouldn’t cover it for some reason, forcing you to pay for it out of pocket, afterwards, you ended up catching the flu and missed a week of work because of it, which caused you to lose out on about half of a paycheck, and to top it all off, a pipe burst in your house and caused hundreds of dollars in damages to the walls.
You flopped back into your couch, groaning and rubbing your face in frustration and exhaustion. You hadn’t been able to eat a proper meal in weeks. You’d been barely scraping by on a diet of ramen noodles and McDonalds, and the extremely unhealthy and unnourishing diet was starting to take a heavy toll on you. From here, you couldn’t really envision a way to dig yourself out of the hole you were currently trapped in…the remaining bills this month were going to drain what little remained of your stock, you weren’t going to get paid for another two weeks, and if you kept up with the diet you currently had, your health was going to decline even further…It was all just a bitter cycle.
You let out a loud cry of anguish as you took your hands from your face and slammed them into cushioning of the couch.
“FUCK!” You screamed at the sky. “WHY CAN’T I JUST GET A FUCKING BREAK?!”
Oh how you wished things were just a little bit easier…ever since you got your first job, things just seemed to be on a never-ending downward spiral. No matter how far you got, or what milestones you reached, or how much money you earned, nothing ever seemed to get any easier. Every day felt like a struggle, and the only thing you could really do these days was waste time recovering from work while simultaneously waiting for when you’d have to go BACK to work…then it would start all over again. It was all just hopeless. You just couldn’t accept that this was all your life would ever be. No real goals, no real friends, just working every day until you died.
…You couldn’t think of this anymore. You were already miserable enough…you needed to take the edge off somehow.
You sat back up and shut your laptop, pushing away the dismal reminder of your meager budget for now. You then sighed and stood up, nearly falling back down because your feet were hurting so badly (The last week at work forced you to stand up too much). You managed to push through it though, slipped on some houseshoes, and retreated to your bedroom, shutting off all the lights and throwing yourself onto your bed where you grabbed your Nintendo Switch off your nightstand.
You quickly fired up Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It was a game you’ve easily sunk hundreds of hours into. You played it for a little bit just about every day after you got off of work, some days you played it for hours, just doing anything and everything you could to make your island look just perfect.
Today would be no different, although you likely wouldn’t play for all that long.
You did some routine stuff; running around the island looking for fossils, talking to your villagers to see what robotic dialogue they’d offer up today, usual stuff.
After a while you decided to run into resident services, mainly so you could look at your favorite character in the game…that being Tom Nook.
Yeah, a lot of people hated him…but you just couldn’t get enough of the guy. You felt a little stupid to admit it, but you kind of admired him. A successful businessman who’d bounced back from financial ruin to become even better, he probably had enough money for his kids to retire if they wanted. And even through all of that, he was still as generous as a saint. You just couldn’t help but look up to him…of course, you realized how looking up to a cartoon raccoon was ridiculous as all hell, but as was stated before, you just couldn’t help it.
Unfortunately, before you could get a good look at the raccoon, you heard your doorbell ring. You quickly sat up in curiosity…wondering who the hell would be visiting you of all people.
You got up, stumbling several times as you reached the door and opened it.
“Hello?” You murmured, peaking your head out into the apartment complex’s hallway.
You couldn’t see anyone…but you did see a small cardboard box on the side of your door. Whoever left it there must’ve dinged and dashed.
Either way, you picked it up and brought it inside. It was then you noticed the note that was attached to it, so you picked it up and read it.
“Hiya there! I know we don’t really know each other outside of work, but I noticed you weren’t doing so well lately, so I sent you this! It may ring a bell!” – Lina.
You sighed. You barely knew anything about Lina besides the fact that she worked in the same area as you. You figured you’d need to step up your pain hiding game if even she could see you weren’t doing well…
But oh well, time to see what’s inside the box!
You opened it up and discovered a small, gold coin with a star on it…a Bell…from Animal Crossing.
“Woah…” You said, picking it up in your hands and absentmindedly moving it around in them. The Bell felt so real…it looked so golden, so shiny, it was almost hypnotic.
Normally, you would’ve thought about how much you could get for it if you sold it at some indie TCG store…but right now, you were just mesmerized by this thing…you didn’t even notice your twitching hands…
Your hands shook and twitched as the skin began to change, toughening up and taking on a leathery texture as their color changed to a deep, nearly-black, brown. Complimenting it, thick fur began to sprout out from every pore, being the same color as the one your hands now were. But that wouldn’t be the end of it, for the fur would begin spreading down your arms, coating them like a sweater. Once the fur reached past your wrists, it took on a lighter brown color. You could also see that your arms were beginning to grow, packing on more muscle by the second.
“Nggh…” You groaned, hazily stuffing the Bell into your pocket. By now you’d seen what was happening to your arms, yet for some reason you couldn’t get yourself to be up in arms (Haha) about it. The new coat you were gaining felt oddly natural…hell, now you couldn’t even remember what your arms looked like without it.
“What…What was I doing again…?” You wondered as you felt more fur beginning to build up on your body, as well as your body growing as well.
You looked down at yourself, watching as your shirt began to lose its slack, tightening as your midsection swelled with fat, muscle, and fur. It wouldn’t be long before it began to work upwards and past your collarbone, too.
You rubbed your face in irritation as you walked to your bathroom, failing to notice as the fur kept on growing, now covering your entire face, and as you looked at your changing reflection in the mirror, you noticed that your fur had gained a mask-like pattern, taking on a darker brown around your eyes. And speaking of which, your eyes changed as well, slowly hue-shifting until they were a bright sea-blue.
As you confusedly ran your hand around your face, grumbling and muttering the whole time, something deep, deep within your being told you- no, SCREAMED at you that this was all wrong, that you were, have been, and always will be human, and that what was currently staring back at you wasn’t you.
But as you watched your nose lose all of its humanity, reshaping itself into a black, ovular shape…something about it all just felt s natural…you looked down at your shirt momentarily. It was beginning to tear from your swelling midsection. You could even feel your pants starting to tighten up…most likely bulking up the same way your upper body did.
You knew you SHOULD’VE been concerned about it, more worried about stopping the destruction of your clothes before you were fully naked…but they weren’t your clothes to begin with, and raccoons had fur already, so you didn’t need to worry right?
…Right?
Your head was beginning to hurt from all the thoughts swimming around in your head. It was like two different consciousness were playing tug-of-war with your brain.
You were then distracted by your face beginning to tingle. You looked back into the bathroom mirror, then beheld as your face began to push and stretch outwards, further scrubbing away any of your human traits as a brand-new raccoon snout made itself comfortable on your face. You even grew a few whiskers for good measure.
“Well…would you look at that.” You mused, gently lifting a hand up to trace the snout. You failed to notice another trait having changed as well: That being your voice. It had grown much deeper, and now slowly was developing an upper-class inflection to it. And compounding things further, the more the seconds passed, the more you got used to the snout being there, soon enough it was as if the thing had been there your entire life. You struggled to recall what your face looked like without it, or any of the other changes that had occurred. It was clear which one of the minds were winning the tug-of-war for your brain.
And speaking of your memories, they were beginning to alter as well. No longer did you remember the days of playing video games on the weekend as a human child, all alone in your bedroom, but instead you began to recall the days in which you’d scour the nearby woods, plundering sticks that looked like swords to be sold at recess the next day.
“W-Wait…! That’s not right-!” You cried out as your shirt tore open, exposing your furry midriff to the uncomfortable air of the bathroom. You let out a yelp in response.
Your mind began to give its all in a feeble last stand. You clutched your head as you desperately fought against the new, unknown memories worming their way into your head.
“My name….my name is…!”
You couldn’t remember your name…Why couldn’t you remember your name?!
As you mentally fought this losing battle, your body continued changing undeterred.
Your pants were beginning to rip apart now, starting from your ankles and spreading all the way up to your knees, the fabric being flung off all across the bathroom floor. Your shoes were also starting to creak and groan, for your feet had been changing the whole time as well.
Their skin now had a deep, deep brown color, and your toes had grown longer and thinned out considerably while gaining sharp claws. And when they had finished changing their structure, they began to grow out in both directions, correcting your unfitting human structure you had before. This came at the cost of your shoes, though, as they would swiftly be broken apart by your growing paws.
“Hrrrghh…! My name is…my name is T….” You grumbled, trying to ignore the uncomfortable feeling of your bare paws against the cold, tiled floor of the bathroom.
“…Tom Nook!” You cheerfully called out, looking at your reflection in the mirror with a smile. With that, your original mind had completely lost the battle, and a new one quickly took its place. Almost as a symbol of its victory, a large, bushy tail erupted from the lower end of your spine, fully completing your transformation with a fluffy little cherry on top.
“Eugh…what on earth am I doing in here..?” You wondered, still clutching the bell in your hand, which was now beginning to glow.
“Must’ve had too much vacation juice last night…goodness..” You took one more look in the mirror to make sure everything was fine. Your button-up vacation shirt looked to be freshly ironed, your shorts were nicely fitting, yep. Everything seemed fine…
…Then why were you in here to begin with?
“Ehh…probably best not to think on it any longer.” You huffed, stuffing the bell into your pocket and stepping out of the bathroom, right into the main room of Resident Services. Taking a quick glance around, you noticed that Isabelle didn’t seem to be around…oh well. She likely needed a break anyway.
As for you though, you still had a few more things to do before you could wrap the day up in full, so you quickly sauntered over to your computer and sat down. But before you could actually get started with anything, your eyes were drawn to the scene outside the window beside you.
You could see the Resident Representative and a few other residents running around with sparklers in the clear, cold night outside. You chuckled a bit, wondering what the occasion was…
You really were lucky…to have amassed a fortune so bountiful that you yourself could offer so many others a chance at a community, a happy home…life was good.
You took the bell out of your pocket and flicked it up with your thumb…where you proceeded to drop it and let it crash into the floor with a loud, uncomfortable ‘CLINK!” noise.
…Your skills at catching objects were…less than good.
