Kate is a Sapien; her ancestors were human if one goes a few hundred ears back to the early days of trnshumanism but since they are no longer 'mules' (looooong story) Kate's parents were both Sapien. Liek Faye, Kate spent time in the military except while Fay went into the exploration of SCENE, Kate went into the military arm. She gained the reputation of being clear-headed even without the use of 'Chill Pills' (Spaiens go into heat which impairs their ability to think clearly; hence, Chill Pills). She signed onto the same ship as Faye did, and was also required to make the same choice. An AI Psych program was used to 'pair off' (or triple-team) the colonists, so Faye figured she shouldn't have ANY problems with the choice...
