Making Mei a paladin seemed a good way to translate her role as a superhero into a fantasy world.

Although the fantasy setting is largely dnd style adventure fantasy, I'm using paladin more like the original meaning of Charlemagne's top twelve knights. Not exactly like but the idea is that the paladins are the Queen's most reliable agents and warriors instead of holy knights.

Mei and Zan were put under the care of the crown of Dunia by their father, a chief of one of the northern tribes bordering Dunia, as a gesture of good will. Serious and dutiful, Mei worked hard at proving herself as a soldier of the crown. She eventually proved herself all the way up to being named one of Jasiri's Paladins.

No frills in her skill set. She's just really good with her blades.
