Mountaineers are basically bobcats/lynxes but also dwarves since they live in mountains. Expelled from their home planet, they struggle to survive in space, but eventually find salvation by discovering technology that predates both humanity and cat-kind. I like to imagine they "become" the mysterious alien race, but are actually just the humble lynx.
