Nik may be happily married to another, but he and Gerhard are two peas in a pod. They even speak the same language. In fact, Gerhard is telling Nik about the origins of Chanukkah, the battle strategies and tactics used by the Maccabees, the miracle of the temple, modern traditions for the holiday, and how said traditions grew from old rituals. Nik, in response, is commenting on how fascinating it is that every religion seems to have a winter festival of some sort, the various traditions and how they have changed over time, how similar some of them are, and asking when they get to eat the chocolate coins already. The subtext runs deep with those two.
