Name : Wazrad-Zishtarad
Title : Record Keeper of Galaxy Y-N: Quadrant A, Sector A
Species : Zonai
Size : 11'3''
Personality : Methodical, studious, mirthful
Relations :
- Ancient acquaintance of Iridalea
- Morvala is using his old thigh bone as her focus
Abilities :
- Master of Bone Magic -
Bone Magic is a special sort of magic that Ynaaverse Zonai are highly skilled with. Wazrad, however, is particularly masterful in its use. To the point of even making use of two entire limbs of his.
This Bone Magic makes use of bones to empower all sorts of spells, but the most common and effective spells they are used for is tracking, teleportation, and monitoring spells. Types of spells that work well with the role the Zonai have taken on as record keepers of the universe. Spells can be further empowered by making use of ones own bones as well.
While they do tend to use their own bones for their spells, they are able to replace them with limbs made of magical energy that are just as good or even better than what they had before. Wazrad has also gone further than most with actually replacing two entire limbs and leaving bones behind on a great many worlds.
- Born Under the Light of the Shard -
The Ynaaverse Zonai evolved on one of the moons that orbits the remains of Iridalea's old homeworld and since her sword and the many Shards that broke loose from it were made from the "blood" of her homeworld, the Zonai are intrinsically connected with the Shards and the power they emit. As a result, they are all naturally larger, stronger, durable, and longer lived than Mortals anywhere else in the Ynaaverse. However, their evolving around the source of the Shards means that they are not effected by Shards in the same way others are. There have been no recorded Demideific ascensions as a result of direct exposure to a Shard in their entire history. A contrast to the likes of Ynaa, Kyth, Lyn, Puszeky, Skögul, and more.
- The First Zonai Demideity -
Shortly after visiting Morvala for the first time, The Marowak crafted a complex spell around the bone that was both her focus and Wazrad's old thigh bone before he left it on Morvala's world centuries prior. Her hope was to enhance the monitoring, teleportation, and even communication aspects of the already present bone magic. Part of that hope being that she could use the bone as a way to communicate with Wazrad in real-time.
Morvala's efforts ended up succeeding marvelously, but had an unexpected result on Wazrad himself. This spell Morvala had crafted was not Shard-based, but built up from a combination of her own research over the centuries of her life and suggestions from her old student turned Deity, Kthaarae. As such, the spell was extremely powerful while also being amplified by the flakes of Shard that Morvala so often uses. All combined together, the spell did as was intended but also did unto Wazrad what Mortals normally experienced when encountering a Shard...
Wazrad now exists as the first and only Zonai to ascend to the Demideity Tier. His natural affinity for bone magic has been magnified massively and expanded into something more akin to "Resonance". For one, being near other Demideities and Deities allows him to temporarily produce a less powerful echo of their own abilities. This "Resonance" and magnified affinity for bone magic has also resulted in an unusual ability to use one of his own bones and build up his resonance with it to such a degree that it becomes him for a time. A form of multimanifestation unique to Wazrad.
Background :
The Zonai of the Ynaaverse are among the most ancient of races and evolved on one of the moons of Iridalea's homeworld. As her homeworld was the source of her sword and thus the Shards that spread throughout the Ynaaverse to eventually grant individuals ascension to higher Tiers of divinity, evolving in orbit around said world naturally gifted the Zonai with an intrinsic connection to the Shards and several advantages over all other Mortal races. They are larger, stronger, more durable, and far longer lived than other races and are even naturally inclined towards various magical pursuits. However, unlike all others the Shards do not have any other effect on the Zonai thanks to the already present deep connection they have.
As the Zonai civilization developed, they also created an unusual form of magic focused on using their own bones as focuses and catalysts. This magic proved to be most attuned to matters of communication, tracking, monitoring, and even teleportation. Abilities that eventually came to be a core part of how the Zonai saw themselves and their place in the universe. They were among the first spacefaring races and, being naturally curious and studious, the Zonai chose to observer, catalogue, and record every discovery and ever species they came across and even great events for all to learn from. This eventually developed into their view of themselves as the universe's record keepers. Observers of the universe, but never interfering.
As part of this task as record keepers, the Zonai often used their bone magics and would leave behind their own bones on worlds of particular interest (homes of species of great potential, worlds where strange events are happening, etc.). This allowing them to monitor the worlds from their own homeworld and even instantaneously teleport back for more direct observations. Thanks to their mastery of a specific form of combined magic and technology, however, this loss of bones is of no hinderance as they can replace the missing bones and even entire limbs with magical energy constructs that work just as well as the original.
Like so much of the rest of his race, Wazrad-Zishtarad was also a record keeper and observer. He was assigned early in his career to a new galaxy on the frontier of Zonai exploration alongside three other Zonai. This galaxy and assigned sector being designated Galaxy Y-N, Quadrant A, Sector A. Y-N:A-A for short.
Even so early in his career, Wazrad had distinguished himself as a true master of the bone magic his people used and was far more prone to leaving behind his own bones on interesting worlds.
Towards the end of his time in Sector A, Wazrad came across a particularly curious world. Over the many many many thousands of years his people had been exploring the stars and then galaxies, they had come across only four Shards from Iridalea's sword and the ancient battle that had shattered it. They knew of Iridalea and her past and that their own homeworld orbited her own now abandoned world and they were also aware that their own unique physiology and abilities were a result of evolving so near the source of her sword and these Shards. As such, whenever they came across a Shard, the Zonai always recorded its location (and if in space, it's trajectory) but let it be. Their belief being that the Shards would one day find their way into the possession of deserving beings.
This particularly curious world that Wazrad found was so curious because it somehow had two Shards on it and had even already been found by two individuals. The first was more of a sliver of a Shard, but it had been forged into a sword and granted its bearer health and long life and the ability to rapidly change her size at will. An ability she used well in combat, but observation over several years showed Wazrad that she was in some ways a kindred soul, albeit one fascinated in learning new styles of combat and pitting herself against them.
The second Shard, however, was found by a woman with an interest in magic and, in particular, sorts of magic that were offshoots of the Zonai's own bone magic. This woman named Morvala had found this Shard and was carefully studying it and the potential uses of even tiny shavings from it. Intrigued both by the presence of two Shards on this world and by this woman who was actively studying a Shard, Wazrad chose to leave not any bone, but one of his thigh bone behind on this world near this curious woman. His initial observations complete and a bone marker for continued monitoring and ease of teleportation left behind, Wazrad sent a report back home on the discovery of two new Shards and continued on his assigned discovery and observation assignment.
A mere couple years later, Morvala happened across this same thigh bone that Wazrad had left behind. Despite his attempts to hide it, the Shard she was working with had a resonance with Wazrad's left behind bone. The two reacting to each other thanks to the Zonai having evolved in orbit around what could be thought of as the original Shard. Ever curious and inquisitive, Morvala took this unusually large bone and chose to use it as a focus for her magic where other magic users would instead use necklaces or pieces of wood or branches. She even grafted a great many flakes of her Shard onto the surface of the bone as a way to further enhance her own spells.
By bringing together Wazrad's already bone magic empowered bone and flakes of a Shard and using her own magics on it, something altogether unexpected happened. Where before, Wazrad's bone was something of a magical beacon, Morvala's actions had turned it also into a magnet. A magnet for more Shards to find their way to this curious world... As the centuries passed, several other Shards that had been traveling near the first two and not been caught by the planet were now drawn back and found their way to the surface. Unlike the first two, however, these latecomers would not be found for centuries yet.
Nearly 500 years after Wazrad left behind his thigh bone on this world and with both Morvala and Yadaale still quietly wandering the world, the Shards that had been drawn in by Morvala's experimenting were at last being found. The result of these Shards being found at last was a growsplosion of new Nephilim, Demideities, and even a trio of new Deities all coming from this one single world.
News of this reverberated through the Zonai record keepers with many questions being asked of what had happened and why. In the countless centuries and millennia they had been observing the universe there had never been such a sudden explosion of new divines, let alone of trio of Deities, in so short a period. Yes, there were new Demideities and Nephilim who had appeared here and there over the long years of history, but this was new.
Wazrad heard these tales as well and on hearing the description of the world he came to realize it sounded oddly familiar. Looking back through his own logs he eventually found that the reason it sounded so familiar was because this was the same world that had had two Shards on it and where he had left his thigh bone. Learning this, he quickly teleported back and found himself not in the wilderness where he had left his bone behind, but in a cozy shack lit by the oddly teal-ish flames of a fireplace. To his surprise, the room was actually quite spaciously built for someone his size... And that he wasn't alone. Sitting on a couch nearby drinking a glass of wine and very relaxed was the same Marowak woman he had seen a half-millennia ago.
Morvala was of course a-bit surprised herself at the sudden appearance of Wazrad, but not as much as she may have been back when she was less than 100. She stood and greeted the unusual newcomer with the formality she once wore as a court wizard and offered him a glass of wine. This too was a new surprise for Wazrad as Morvala's standing up showed him that she was now every bit as tall as he was. A result of Morvala's hundreds of years of exposure to a Shard. He agreed and as Morvala strode off for another wine goblet, Wazrad finally noticed that his old thigh bone was actually in the fireplace and providing some of that teal light... A light that matched near perfectly with the Shard on the mantle above.
The two talked for hours. Morvala asking questions of who and what Wazrad was (along with pretty quickly figuring out that the bone she had so long used as a focus was actually one of Wazrad's) and Wazrad asking about the recent explosion of Nephilim, Demideities, and Deities... And then about Morvala herself. He had observed her studies of the Shard, yes, but he had never actually grown to know who she was. The Zonai had a strict non-interference policy, but Wazrad realized that he had accidentally interfered with the development of this world and determined that it wouldn't hurt to explain what had happened to Morvala. Especially as she was already putting the pieces together even before he described who the Zonai were.
Agreeing to keep in contact and having actually enjoyed each others company more than either expected, Wazrad departed. Teleporting back to the Zonai homeworld to report on what happened before returning to his cataloging duties.
Morvala, meanwhile, began to ponder how she could use this new understanding of exactly what this bone she had used as a focus for so long truly was to enhance her spells and magic... For a long time she had considered herself mostly retired from such things, but Wazrad's arrival had once more sparked the old curiosity and inquisitiveness in her. Moreover, she also wanted to try and find a way to enable communication with Wazrad through this bone of his. She had, after all, really enjoyed his company and could not deny that she would like to spend more time with him someday.
It was during Wazrad's transit to the next world in his endless journey of discovery and cataloguing that Morvala's experimentation met with unexpectedly potent success. Not only had she managed to initiate two-way real-time communication through a bone, but the magics she had used interacted with the Shard flakes in the bone and Wazrad's intrinsic natural connection with the Shards to compound and compound again in power. What resulted was one more entirely new event in the history of the Ynaaverse. One moment Wazrad was on his starship flying through space and the next he had growsploded out of it and accidentally kicking a nearby star out of the way with his foot. Wazrad had become the first and only Zonai Demideity.
Morvala of course apologized for accidentally causing such a thing to happen, but Wazrad waved off her concerns as he slowly came to terms with what this new existence would mean for him. It technically didn't prevent him from continuing with what he had always done, after all. Quickly teleporting back for communication that would be more direct than just this near-telepathic link the two were using, Wazrad thanked Morvala though also suggested with a chuckle she not experiment with more spells on the bone lest anything else odd happen. Another long talk between the two eventually ended with Wazrad giving the old Lady Annawyn a formal bow and kiss on the hand as he had seen performed so many long years in the past and a suggestion that the two should make these chats a regular occurrence.
Wazrad continues to learn more about what he can do now, but at the same time is continuing his duties as ever. A God of Observers and Record Keepers forever curious and inquisitive.
It took a year and a half, but at long last I've finally made the Zonai character I wanted to create after playing through Tears of the Kingdom!
Really happy with him and also really happy with how he and the Zonai are helping to explain some lingering holes in the Ynaaverse plot that I've never been able to answer (one of those holes being why there are so many Shards on the world so much of my cast are from) ^^
