This Tournament is an epitaph to the entire Robin/Marian affair. You know that Marian is my wife and that we have children - but that's not enough. I must assert my claim to her before him. He is the only one standing in my way. Not the most dangerous opponent in a love match, I tell you. But it is still difficult for me to interfere in this story with such intentions.
And only a few participants here have a clue as to what's going on. Most amusingly, John is in a state of celebratory euphoria and pride while the other characters wait for Robin Hood to show up.
