I've long not been able to comprehend 'America First'.
It seems arrogant, to me. Always has. As if humans in other countries are less deserving of compassion. As if we're not all made of the same stuff. With the same potential, the same capacity for love and spark and as if country lines aren't manmade figments. As if by the random assignment of location where we're born is our choice and our fault. As if most born citizens would do well on the same citizenship test they snidely consider necessary to belong here. How some people bristle at even hearing Spanish spoken in public as if it's somehow inferior or dirty and not simply another language, one with the same roots as our own. As if they aren't siblings.
I used to do more opinionated pieces like this more often. To be honest my medication is keeping me more on the level than I'd normally be. I'm too numb to be as angry as I want to be.
Anyway, less charged stuff later. Thank you.
ETA: Civil disagreement can stay but remember this isn’t town hall with freedom of speech absolutism it’s my virtual living room and if you rub your poopy butt all over my carpet I have no shame kicking you out and getting rid of your poop.

A-fucking-men to all of this. I've never, never understood people who get joy from the suffering of others. Who look down on their fellow human beings for speaking a different language, or coming from a different background, or just for looking a certain way. Thank you so much for posting this. It's nice to be reminded that there are other people who feel this way.
What's really funny about the "America First" thing is how self-contradictory it is. Like they want lots of exports, fewer migrants, and a reduction or elimination of foreign aid? Well, one of the best ways to stop migrants from trying to enter the US, and also one of the best ways to build markets to sell exports into, is to use foreign aid to improve economic and living conditions in other countries.
But heaven forbid we allow nuance to enter the conversation. No, no, I'm sure that tariffs and walls will solve all the problems.
But heaven forbid we allow nuance to enter the conversation. No, no, I'm sure that tariffs and walls will solve all the problems.
I feel like that's giving the leaders too much credit. I remember a quote from, of all places, one of the talk radio stations in the GTA games, when the host is introducing a politician, saying "he says things that make people nod their head." It's like their "politicians" aren't even politicians at all, but rather people just doing a cosplay impression of what they think a politician looks like, saying things on the campaign trail, at rallys, on tv etc that get people cheering for them and voting for them. But behind it all there's just nothing, an empty void. No grand plan, no policy, no coherent vision of the future. Just a lust for power fuelled by an unquenchable anger and endless resentment.
My goal is to not have to trust politicians. I'll be cheering on the ones who advocate for more checks and balances, limits on power, and consequences for corruption and grift. And I'll always be opposed to the ones who say "make me your king and I promise things will be great".
As I see it, the problem with "tell me so I can block you" is that most people simply... won't.
They will keep it to their local chats and private groups, and unlike Twitter where it's visible, when they do it on other websites, you could never know.
There's a person I know who is very right-wing, but hides it really well after their views got them in trouble once. It was a surprise to me what they're like when I found out - they kept it to places where I didn't know they even are.

I was stuck watching Fox News in a tire shop last year. It struck me how every story was meant to cause rage. Just had this sneering, smug unpleasantness to it. I was glad when I got the chance to switch it to some kind of house remodeling channel. I have zero interest in that but all the negativity and ill will was uncomfortable to sit through.
Keeping this short, but; that is precisely it. These are people whom are miserable with their existence for a multitude of reasons, and cannot understand that not everybody else is too. Nor do they ever seem to realize that those leaders "on their side" are responsible for their plight, and actually want to keep them poor and hating, because it distracts them from rising up and giving them the French treatment...
For those whom have lost friends and family to this madness, hang in there. Don't give up. Don't let the bastards win. You are not wrong. And you are loved.

I live and work with folks who are about as far-right as they come due to being in the deep south.
From what I understand, it's a combination of them thinking that their sympathy has been taken advantage of and those condemning them are arguing from rather a naive or disingenuous position.
Due to their moral code being rooted in scripture even if they've departed a bit, it can be used to interpret the moral justification behind their actions.
For example, while the Bible says to be kind to the foreigner for we were foreigners ourselves and to give forgiveness when we are wronged, it also says to take the plank out of one's eye before addressing the speck in the eye of one's neighbor and not to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs, latter verse followed by even the little dogs under the children's table are fed from the crumbs.
While the individual is supposed to be a good Samaritan and do good as they are able helping others, the government is more like a shepherd tasked with protecting its citizens over all else. With it already struggling to take care of the poor, burdening the already strained systems is viewed as not only hypocritical but malicious in nature as an attempt to cause collapse and weaken the nation so that it may be conquered via revolution.
With folks jaded from arguing with folks they think are lying to their face, sarcasm emerges with memes like "5 heartbreaking stories that'll make ya say screw having civilization and sh**." That get used to paint them as lacking empathy.

That doesn't mean that that's valid or justified. Territories like that are taken by force as colonial or imperialist ventures.
Funny that all of those US territories are a result of US imperialism and force, largely or all under force by Drumpf's hero McKinley during his administration, and that Drumpf is proposing to start a whole new round of that.

there are international laws and regulations dealing with those, but there are specific methods and ports of entrance to do it within each country. you should see mexico's immigration system, and how quickly they deal with law breakers.

I still say that people have a basic right to igrate, and I'd like to see borders abolished. That's certainly not gonna happen any time soon, though.
Comparing the US to Mexico in that regard is sort of silly, and much more complicated than that simple comparison.
And just because a law exists doesn't make it right or just.

you can believe anything you wish, but people do not have a right to emigrate to other countries. this is something that is agreed by the majority of countries on earth.
you CAN migrate, but you need permission and you need to go through the proper channels.

I disagree, obviously. Borders and many border policies around the world are cruel, and the result is misery and death. Look at the new Drumpf border policies, for example. It's scapegoating a whole class of innocent people here, and spreading fear. It's cruel, but the cruelty and fear are the point. It's certainly not for any justifiable reason. It's the classic fascist playbook. And this while we need these people here. This could destroy our economy.

The laws and policies that Drumpf and his gang are currently imposing on innocent people are expressly cruel.
In regards to the question on migration I asked you, it was "What would you do if you were starving or oppressed in your country?
The point is to put yourself in the place of someone whose life is critically endangered by remaining where they are. I'm betting you'd get the hell out by any means necessary, laws be damned, as countless desperate people around the world are currently doing.

>What would you do if you were starving or oppressed in your country?
a good question, a test of "morality" so to speak.
the answer isn't important, mainly due to the fact that the people being removed from the country are
1) criminal aliens, people who have been caught commiting serious crimes and
2) people here that are what are called "economic migrants"
neither people that are being deported are what you call "refugees" or "asylum seekers" because asylum seekers to even be accepted have to go through actual asylum processes.

I think the answer to that question IS important. That's why I asked it. And you're still dodging it.
The vast majority of the people deported are not criminals, and people are not "Aliens". That's a phrase used to dehumanize fellow humans who happen to be immigrants, usually of color. There's a huga amount of racism in all of this, and even replacement theory. Steven Miller, the guy behind all of this crap. is all about that.
Undocumented immigrants also commit far fewer crimes statistically than citizens do, particularly violent crimes.
Deporting people for nonviolent crimes is ridiculous. The just passed Laken Riley act would allow people to be deported when they've only been accused of crimes. Zero due process, which is a basic constitutional right. This is despicable, and even some Dems supported it.
So people should just die if they have no way to feed themselves because of the climate catastrophe? That's coming for us here too, you know. The day might well come when a lot of people here are forced to migrate out of total desperation.
And you're absolutely wrong on the last thing. Drumpf and his minions are threatening to deport or deny entry to pretty much anyone no matter what, especially those of color, no matter iwhether they're refugees, asylum seekers, or anything else. don't forget, he's said that he wants to deport 20 or 25 million immigrants, even though there are only 11 to 13 million undocumented immigrants here. of course it will be impossible to deport anywhere remotely near that many people.
I'll guarantee you that there won't be any raids on Irish bars, despite the large number of undocumented Irish people here.
Drumpf has even said that he'd like to deport "Internal enemies" such as members of the press and "The radical left", such as myself. Where he would deport these people to is a mystery. Perhaps the camp he wants to expand at Guantanamo where he wants to deport people he thinks are the "Worst of the worst" and are so much of a danger that we can't risk them ever returning here?
He wants to deport foreign students who are pro Palestinian protesters, who he insists are all Hamas supporters. So much for the right to protest... Insanity.
This would also cost an insane sum of money, drive up prices and destroy the economy, or even drive us into a depression. We need these people here. they're crucial to the economy and only a good thing.
And all of that ignores the sheer cruelty and immorality of all of this.

actually, all of them are criminals. they all broke the law to cross the border. but thats not the point, right now trump's ICE is going after and deporting rapists, child traffickers, drug smugglers, gang members and other such nere do wells.

specifically this part:

Designating desperate people who cross the border for a better life criminals is cruel and immoral. We also need these people here. They make our country stronger, as well as a better place.
Many of the people coming here are also doing so as a direct result of US policies towards their countries. Our sanctions against Cuba and Venezuela would be prime examples., as well as our long time policies regarding most central American countries and beyond.
ICE is trying to deport anyone found to be undocumented, not just violent criminals. They're doing this largely via racial profiling. They're even sweeping up US citizens, all of these people happen to have dark skins. It's racist. It's sowing fear, tearing families apart, sending people to countries they may not have lived in since they were a kid and don't speak the language and will have no ID or way to survive, causing people to be afraid to go out in public. To school, hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores, churches, anywhere. People are afraid to report crimes to police, endangering themselves as well as everyone else. Sowing fear and getting dark skinned people out of the country is the point.
Sending people back to some of these countries amounts to a likely death sentence.
We already have laws to deal with violent criminals, etc.
One of Drumpf's EOs seeks to change long time policy to allow for raids at churches, day cares, schools, hospitals, etc. This will be fought in court. As a matter of fact, it already is.
"Aliens" is antiquated language and unnecessary. Language changes. "Undocumented immigrants" is a more accurate and non dehumanizing phrase. An awful lot of this is precisely about dehumanizing people of color.
Drumpf said that all pro Palestinian protesters are Hamas supporters, not just people flying Hamas flags.

Saying "They" ;ike that denies the variety of people's experiences. A lot of people are doing things like that right now because of what a bad time this is to come here because of what Drumpf and his gang are doing to he US. It's bad for everyone here, too.
Everything I said was true and none of it was an exaggeration.

saying "They" is the proper way of discribing large groups of people and/or a person who's sex is unknown, quit being a leftist.

except he's the most popular president in decades, winning not only the popular vote, but all seven swing states.
love him, or hate him it doesn't matter. what does matter is that doing the job that he was hired to do, AND he has the mandate from the people to do so.
as i said before, you're fearmongering with no evidence to support.

Very well said. I always feel like if we could just agree to treat all of our fellow human beings with just a base level of empathy and respect, all of these political discussions would be so much less pointy and toxic. No matter what your political persuasions are or how understandably passionate one might be about defending them, I feel like once it gets to the point where you start to hate other people for any reason, you really need to take a step back and re-evaluate where your priorities lie.
I don't live in America, but that whole "Our country first" attitude is becoming concerningly popular again here in Germany as well. Which is a little extra sad considering how historically wrong that went last time...

This post wasn’t charged - it’s normal.
When I hear “america first,” I think of the footage of that orange nincompoop shoving a guy out of his way at the UN - or I think of the camps.
No decent person should ever stop hating or fighting the Trump administration, however they can. I’m proud of you for making this post.

I just don't get what's been happening to cause this level of hate.
I just don't get why people think it's okay to just...shit on other people like that. That there exists such things as "the sin of empathy" outside of deliberately grimdark satirical stuff.
It's so...stupid. So frustrating.
I'm glad you're on the same side, though, Pie. I'm so tired of all of it.

I two thousand percent agree with you. That's what's so tiring about all of it.
It shouldn't be a stance that's argued against, wanting people in general to be okay and not hated. It shouldn't be a stance to have to "take" to want better for everybody. Why on earth anybody thinks that's an argument that needs to be had is just...ugh.

It's true what people say - there really is no hatred like so-called Christian love. You are completely spot on, and it's good to see you post this to remind so many of us that we aren't the only ones who feel the way we do about all this.
You would think that having empathy, compassion and concern for other human beings would be a quality to be broadly treasured, especially in this day and age - you know, wanting to make the world a better place. But the fact that there are so many people who view this as somehow being a weakness and a character flaw shows just how far they've gone off the rails. It really makes you question what sort of world they would want this to be.
What kind of a life must that be, to think that looking down on others is the right way to be? What could these people possibly get out of hating other people not because of something they're known to have done, but simply because of who they are - for things they have no control over? Just like you've said, nobody asks to be born where they are or the way they are.
Somebody else brought up the America First notion we've all been hearing so much about. It's crystal clear that tangerine features does not understand that global trade is not a one way street, and neither is migration. And neither he or anyone he chooses to keep in his Party appears to be the least bit interested in trying to tackle any of the laundry list of problems their country faces, instead preferring to score cheap political points. I've seen enough of the States to know that it has got itself into one mother of a mess - and I don't even live there.
As SnowLeandre said, if somebody begins hating others simply for how they look, what their background is, what language they speak or what have you, they need to take a step back and reevaluate themselves and where their priorities in life lie. But whether these individuals are actually capable of any level of introspection or taking responsibility for their own actions is quite another matter.

Seeing people honestly concerned about the safety of their loved ones and having people react like it was some kind of sports team loyalty thing worthy of mockery and derision … I can have some grace for people who are under the impression we’re overreacting and try to comfort instead of mock … at least their initial reaction to a human upset is to try and help. But those who just giggle and tease over it like teenage boys trolling on the internet are another story.
Not american but I just read about that "sin of empathy". The bishop is right, you have to give to the poors, the migrants. Trans kid I leave aside because the Bible doesn't mention anything.
But you have to actually exercise empathy, and not moral posturing. There's probably not a sin of empathy, but there sure is a sin of hypocrisy.
Migrants enter the country ? You can't just let them work in the field for cheap, that's modern slavery. Every migrant that enters the country should receive shelter, language courses and offered training for jobs in sectors that are hiring if they didn't get experience or education in their country. Offering anything less is just making them modern slaves and is certainly not "empathy".
I see it as this: to avoid hypocrisy you either keep them out, or *welcome them*.
MAGA prefers the violent way, it's gonna create a lot of suffering ; but they actually have the moral high ground compared to the festering pile of shit that is the current status quo.
The same goes with Europe, people patting themselves on the back for being humanists while they let migrants risk their life crossing the sea and let most become homeless and slowly wasting on the streets of the big cities. Apparently the idea of migrants losing loved ones at sea tickles their romantic aspiration ; but this is not a novel, it's real life and real deathes.
I'll call european - which I am - humanists when they set up free no-question-asked ferry lines from north Africa to european ports, build housing (not gonna happen it would lower the bourgeoisie's income from rents) and educate them, not before,
But you have to actually exercise empathy, and not moral posturing. There's probably not a sin of empathy, but there sure is a sin of hypocrisy.

I'll call european - which I am - humanists when they set up free no-question-asked ferry lines from north Africa to european ports, build housing (not gonna happen it would lower the bourgeoisie's income from rents) and educate them, not before,
Taking delight in the suffering of others has never sat well with me. Clearly, a lot of people either forgot the value of history or never learned to appreciate it in the first place. There's an old saying that those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it. The sad thing that that those of us who DID learn and try to warn of potential consequences will now have suffer as well until this proverbial dumpster fire burns out.
A great drawing and a wonderful sentiment. I couldn't agree more.
I allow myself to get "political" only on Facebook and, sometimes, Twitter. Otherwise, I tend to avoid politics on this and other platforms. Not because I don't enjoy politics and a good political debate -- because I do. But I'm also aware that most people visit my page for art and not for political diatribes. And also because I've been bitterly disappointed in some of the responses I've gotten from people I thought were otherwise reasonable human beings. And, sadly, it doesn't seem to matter where those folks land on the political spectrum.
