I'm trying to use openCanvas too but it's a bit annoying that the version I've got crashes whenever I try to save my drawings.
As for GIMP, I do find it difficult to use too - just a matter of habit I guess.
Photoshop CS2 does come with a large help file, but the best way to learn it is to look for tutorials on the web.
