The feasibility of extracting energy directly from stars was always contested in many corners of the galaxy. Many scientists argued that one would have to spend too many resources to build something so enormous, and the technology wasn't there yet. Physicists entertained the idea, arguing that the possibility of semi-unlimited energy would propel a civilization thousands of years ahead. Scholars questioned the ethics of such an act: planets would die for this, let alone the star become a slave for the civilization in question.
Regardless, the people of Sirius did it. Their massive construct extracted and processed the nuclear reactions in the star, turning them into consumable energy. What they failed to address, however, is by the time it was finished, most of its external layers were hundreds of years old. Towers of pipes and cables and ancient writing, so old, the current project managers didn't know what they were meant for.
After a generation of conflict and debate, the people of Sirius let go, and effectively forgot what was the purpose of all this machinery. It still works and stands the test of time, but in the end, it was useless. This city of rust surrounds an aging star, and one day, it will be consumed by it, however naive their current inhabitants might be.
